Help, pretty sure my dartfish is dead shortly

Looks to have a ton of internal damage now that's more prevelant than this morning.

You can see his body is not white but more purple red than anything.

Didn't make it. Put him out of his misery because he was struggling so bad.

Get that Gramma out of your tank!

They're peaceful if no one comes near his spot, he's VERY territorial. If your tank isnt big enough for other fish to swim WAY past his spot he's going to chase/attack/bully/hassle (pick yours) them.

I've had them in a 13.5G nano and the only fish that didn't get hassled were the clowns, because they'll kick his butt if he does. I had to get rid of him since if he didnt kill a fish directly, his behavior would cause other fish to be too stressed and hide, then they wont eat and then they get "sick" then they die.

Then I tried him on my 90G and still, he would just claim to much space as his and therefore disrupt the entire swimming pattern of the other fish, not to mention the tension "in the water", you can feel it. Eventually I donated him quickly.

I also fell for the "peaceful" category in Liveaquaria and they're correct in a sense that they could not classify the gramma as semi-agressive, because territorial isnt exactly the same as semi-agressive. Semi-agressive fish can be really agressive, beyond territorial.

I learned that there are some nuances in the subjective meaning of peaceful, there could be specific circumstances that will influence their behavior for good or worse.

There are other fish that are also classified as peaceful but DEPENDING on your setup they might not be suited. I've had midas blenny kill a couple of fish indirectly, and I tried quite a few due to personality traits that also might influence behavior. They're also classified as peaceful.

So, although the Gramma is classified as peaceful and SEEMS TO BE one of the most beautiful fish suitable for a small peaceful tank, he's not worth it, unfortunately. Accept it, choose something else, keep your tank peaceful, your fish healthy and happy.

I would recommend him for a semi-agressive tank full of damsels and dottybacks that behave more like him.

I was never able to recover a wounded fish, very hard, requires a lot of knowledge and experience, so don't feel bad. Just learn the lesson and move on.

Fish died, I put him out of his misery. And dang guess I'll see if my LFS will take him back, thank you for your reply. What a shame such a beautiful fish, but I want a peaceful tank, not a war zone over territory.

They will take it back if you donate it, its an easy sell for them.

Otherwise, I would recommend offering it in the marketplace here in R2R or find someone near you on Nextdoor.

The fish being dealt with also makes a difference. Gramma are rarely extremely aggressive to the point of direct murder, but it can happen with anything. One major issue is just how peaceful firefish are with other fish. They aren’t known to stand up for themselves, but instead will flea. When there is nowhere to go, problems arise. I think it’s pretty likely that it got spooked and hit a rock, wall, or the lid too hard and that caused some form of internal damage.

I can second this: grammas can be very territorial in a small tank if another fish threatens their territory. Install a camera and watch your fish remotely. They usually act differently when not being actively watched.

How can he think that a peaceful firefish just passing by is a threat to its territory? The poor thing didn't have a clue, it was just swimming around minding his business, dealing with his own issues when out of the blue this sucker pops out spooks the hell out of him and whacks him in the head.

Well unfortunately he's dead now. Gramma is back at the store. Picked up another firefish and a watchman goby. Both came from the same tank at the store and are getting along well. Staying by each other in my tank.

Yeah felt bad for a while today that I killed him by introducing the gramma. Had to be the gramma causing him stress/possible fighting. I tried to get him to come back but I could tell he was done. Looked up a quick way to put him out of his misery.

End of the day it is a fish, but I don't want to kill things because I'm not versed on things.

The worst part of owning pets is that we generally outlive them. I saw a little girl many years ago on the David Letterman Show that started keeping tortoises because she wanted to die before her pets. Parrots can outlive humans as well. Fish, not so much.

Such a beautiful fish, but I don't want a murder in the tank. I enjoy not waking up to dead fish.
