Help save stubby!

As Humblefish suggested, I would next give him a bath in acriflavine or Ruby Reef Rally. The antiseptic and antibacterial quality is a real plus. And then follow through with the praziquantel treatment.

How is Stubby doing this morning?

I agree with what’s been said. Did the specs look like sesame seeds?

Just a thought, and nothing to do with whether he has flukes or not, but generally when I've seen fish hanging tight in a top corner like that, it's due to aggression, and another fish cornering them there.

Watch those two like a hawk.

Alright - so stubby has been good this morning! I’m pretty sure he had flukes...I’m thinking with them coming in they might have had tiny flukes and. Because of his injury was maybe the first one to show signs!

So - I will take the coral banded shrimp out and put him with the corals. Hopefully after a couple days in the main tank (3 or 4 weeks from now), they will re-bond and be good to go! I will treat all with prazi for safety!

@Maritimer - I’ve been watching close and haven’t seen aggression, however, for safety sake, I’m going to go ahead and use my fish trap/acclimation box to separate the bully. It’s plenty big and he will still get the prazi treatment!

Precaution, precaution, precaution.

@Big G - fins are looking good! Nice and clear! Watching close for “dust” or spots!

Running around like crazy today, so hoping to have all this done this afternoon! Just did a big water change last night, so good time to start prazi!

By the way - you all are amazing! I’ve learned so much but still have lots more to learn! I love it when people say “how in the world do you know all of this?!” At least I feel like I’ve learned a lot. But I know I have a long way to go. Thankful for this R2R family!

OMG - so - finally home to get a good look at stubby and he looks like someone put him through a grinder! Fins shredded, top fin almost looks like the top is broken off. He is in BAD shape! Still swimming around, but hiding in corners. The FW dip wouldn't have done this to him, would it? Now his fins look like they have air bubbles on them. Not necessarily white spots. And the gobys and other cardinal look absolutely fine!

Got the shrimp into the coral tank, and going to get the separation container into the QT for the bully. Treating with prazi. Anything else I need to do? Mental note - never ever having 2 QT tanks going at the same time again so that I have one free to use as hospital in case one in QT gets sick . .. . lesson learned.

Had a similar incident with a Starry Blenny (mean guy), Pink Watchman Goby, and 2 very small clowns in a 10 qt. The SB attacked all of them. Killed one of the clowns with a couple of bites, the other clown almost jumped out of the tank to get away, and the goby hid in the corner like a telephone pole not moving despite the blenny biting him. Ran into town, bought a Petco 10 put the surviving clown in. Put an egg crate divider between the SB and the goby. First the SB tried to and succeeded in squeezing through the egg crate to get to the goby. Then I put 1/4" mesh on the egg crate and the SB kept biting and trying to pull it out of the way to get to the goby. Talk about mean. Looks like this:

The other cardinal beating him up pretty bad as Maritimer mentioned?
I'm thinking so - - - so much for a "bonded pair" :(

I don't know what else it would be from. And if he is - he is very sneaky about it and doing it when I am not looking. Stubby had also stopped hiding after I had trapped the bully for the past week - he was hiding up by the filter, but he has been out and normal all week. I feel horrible.

Now not sure he is going to make it. I couldn't get the freaking bully caught (it is only a 20 gallon tank - you would think I would be able to) But caught Stubby, and he is resting peacefully. Unfortunately as I was looking, he was laying on the bottom, but then would get up. It isn't looking promising. :( I hate this. I went ahead and started prazi. I figure with him being sick, even if it is from just being beat up, prazi is a must. I will let you know how he does tonight

@Big G - LOVE the divider! I have a TON of extra egg crate as I made my frag rack, and lots of extra 1/4" screen from making my screens! I will DIY one as soon as I can just to have on hand! LOVE IT! You just attached it with zip ties? I figure they are probably more aggressive in QT than if they have a big giant tank to spread out in.

Hopefully stubby pulls through!

I've made the same dividers for all of my tanks. Lesson learned. All of those same fish are together now in my 90. The Starry Blenny still swoops around the tank but doesn't attack anyone anymore. But the goby turns dark when he comes near him.
It's tough to watch these guys behaving badly. All we want for them is to be healthy and happy. You are doing the right things for them. Rest easy in that knowledge.

Thanks Gary! I was just hoping to have learned enough to not lose anyone in QT any more. 1/6 fish wouldn't be terrible compared to what I used to do, but still hate losing a fish. Maybe he will pull through.

Funny - I can't BELIEVE my eyes! Went down to check on water that is mixing and saw the "bully" (which I think will now be his name) trying everything to get to stubby. Poor guy! @Maritimer was right all along. If I wasn't out of town, they would have been ok. Making me nervous for my trip to San Diego this week. :(

Yep. My starry blenny would actually bite the 1/4" mesh and try to pull down the divider to get to the goby. It's like he was possessed with one thought only. And all of this was going on as I was just beginning to prophylactically treat them with Prazi.
Maritimer is wise.
But your guy did have some flukes too. On a fish that small, just a few could and were really hurting his ability to breathe and recover from the attacks.

Sorry I missed all the fun Jenna, but it sounds like you got it all figured out. Best of luck to stumpy.

The fun is just beginning!! (By the way your fluke video was SO SO helpful!!).

Poor guy! His fins are just SHREDDED! And everyone else is happy as can be! So prazi started! This is the only container I had to separate him and it doesn’t allow for much flow.
Earlier he was literally laying in the bottom of the isolation unit.
I took one of the air stones and put it inside the container with him.

I went to do the first water change for the main tank and he was actually up looking at least 1/2 alive!!!

According to @jsker we will be starting the stubby fan club! Haha. T-shirts with his picture and call it the stub club.

We will see how he is tomorrow! I told my family if the bully keeps it up in the main tank he will be banished to the sump!
I hope they learn to play nice!!

Someone very wise once told me that most fish won't ever really "like" or "love" one another as humans do.

The best you can hope for is that two fish will tolerate one another, and sometimes only then because they need each other for breeding, protection, etc.

It's very caveman like in the fish world. ;)
