Help save stubby!

Someone very wise once told me that most fish won't ever really "like" or "love" one another as humans do.

The best you can hope for is that two fish will tolerate one another, and sometimes only then because they need each other for breeding, protection, etc.

It's very caveman like in the fish world. ;)

Makes sense - I just prefer they not kill each other on my time! HAHA :)

This is what happens when family is visiting and you don't want to watch the movie they are watching . . . ;Smuggrin
@jsker - you are to blame for this! :)

Nice work :) Interesting watching the little "mugger" in the background kinda twitching his nose at Stubby. Yikes.

Yeah - the bully is a BIG bully!

Good news!!!! Stubby actually ate a bite tonight!!!! He hasn’t eaten in 2 days!! I feel like this is promising!!!

I bought 4 bangai in this batch of quarantine fish... let’s just say I needed some good news on yours! :/

Not sure, all of the others made it... including some very hard to keep fish... they’re my only losses in this batch so far
Oh no! What happened!?!?

Alright - for those of you still following, stubby is growing his fins back really well!! But now - he is doing everything he can to get at the other cardinal through the divider!! Tonight I saw him squeeze part of his body throug the egg crate!!!! I only have 1/4" netting on the bully side!! Like he's trying to get revenge!!

So - I noticed that one of his gills is kind of ripped away from his face further up above where his fin attaches and that it is pulled away. He is eating fine, not showing signs of infection, and not acting like it's bothering him. They are done with the 6 week QT next week. I will be giving the bully to my in laws and separating them.

Do I need to keep stubby in the QT until his gill is healed? Will it heal? Or if he shows no signs of distress, can he go ahead and move?
@Humblefish @melypr1985 @4FordFamily - @Big G - could use your input or anyone else!!

I would keep him in qt. Lot easier to treat and observe. trying to catch him in dt would be an absolute pain in the rearend.

^^^ agreed. Just in case you need to treat him for an infection. It's a low stress environment. A good thing. P.S. I'd probably want revenge on the bully, too. LOL
He's been through so much. Let's give him one last treatment to send him off in great shape:

Epsom Salt:
Treats eye and other injuries. Popeye in one eye usually means injury, but popeye in both eyes usually denotes a bacterial infection requiring antibiotic treatment. Cloudy eye can be a bacterial infection or flukes.

How To Treat - 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of aquarium water. Repeat only once, if necessary. Use only “USP” grade Epsom salt.

Pros - Reef safe, as Epsom salt is just magnesium sulfate.

Cons/Side Effects - The effects of excessive sulfate in a reef aquarium are not fully known.

Ok. I'm going to keep an eye on him for a couple days. Bully is going to his new home Monday and e goby's can go in the main tank next week. I'll treat him as soon as they are out! And he will have the tank to himself. I'll keep him in for a couple extra weeks.

The epsom salt won't hurt but it's really best for treating swelling. If the wound isn't swollen, then I don't think it's going to do much for poor stubby. Keep an eye on him to be sure that gill doesn't get infected. Keep him in QT until it looks to have healed over. I'm not sure if it will go back down to where it was, or if the tissue will just heal like it is.... time will tell. Keep feeding him the great foods and vitamins that you have and put the netting on his side of the eggcrate too :)
