Help With Angry Bird Please

Hello. I would appreciate some help with a RR USA Angry Bird.

I purchased a frag/nub from RRU and it arrived on Thursday without much color. I wouldn’t be as worried if it was browned out but the lack of pigment has me worried. I started it under just an ATI Blue+ with a little indirect spillover from the main light. It is now reveling about 175 par for 4 hours a day. I plan on adding a couple of hours a day and then move it to 325 par.

The picture above was just taken. It basically looks the same as when it arrived. Does anyone have any advice?

1 ATI Blue+, 1 ATI Coral+, no-name led

Phos .06
Nitrate 8
Alk 8.8
Mg 1520
Ca 410

Thanks in advance for any advice.
I got one from them as well, when it arrived it was pale, but maybe not as pale as yours but over the next few days it completely "paled out" that was months ago and its still not dead but its super pale with no polyp extension i figured it was going to die, and in frustration ordered one from TSA treated it the same, put it right next to the pale one from RRU, and it has been doing great. has some nice color (would probably be better if i moved it somewhere with more par) good polyp extension and is encrusting.

Having a piece arrive on time and in temperature, and looking like that in the bag would upset me a bit. Especially knowing the kind of expense laid out for this.

I would encourage some communication with them. Hopefully it will pull through, but it should not arrive looking like that. Looks like it spent 4 hours in CoralRx or something.

Thanks for the input. It’s surprising to me that it has survived for months in the same condition. I expected mine to get better or die faster than that. I guess I’ll see what happens.

I thought that buying from the source would provide the best frag, but I guess that’s not the case with or RRU angry bird. I’m glad you got a good frag from TSA. Thanks again.

Yes. I was quite disappointed. I wasn’t really surprised that it was a little nub, but I was quite surprised at the condition.

It looked like that in the bag. I didn’t dip it in hopes of giving it the best chance of survival. I actually wasn’t very impressed with the packaging. The I nsulation was just half-inch pieces of Styrofoam inside a small box. The temp seemed to be OK when it arrived though.

I have reached out to RRU a few times. I got a couple of brief responses with no suggestions other than to keep doing what I’m doing and give it some time. They actually didn’t seem surprised at the condition or anxious to do anything to help. I wish I knew what it looked like when they shipped it.

Thanks for the input.

The only thing you did wrong was the decision to buy from RRU. Every frag I ever received from them looked terrible in the bag.

I guess I should have done a little more research.

I will say that I also got a New York Nicks Torch and a Goniopora that look great. There was a Blasto frag that I was worried about at first, but seems to be doing well. There was also a fruit pebble acro. It RTN’d about a third of the way up, but seems to be holding its own now. There was also a zoa frag that was just fine too. So, it seems like the acros were/are the problem.

I only ordered acros. Sounds like we can’t blame it on shipping if they know how to get lps and zoas from point a to point b with no problems.

I’ve gotten a lot of frags in like that. Some even white. Low par and leave it alone. Like 200 no more. Don’t change it until the color is back. Once color is back slowly take it up. And with that size of a frag I would leave it at 250 until it’s encrusting the plug. Then start taking it up. Here’s my RRU Angry Birds. Bought it as a nub.

i got this one to live after 4 nights in Memphis. I agree with others that stable should save it. I’d be irked if I got a piece like that without any shipping issues.

Thanks for the advice! I'm really glad to hear that you have saved some like this. Your Angry Bird is beautiful!

I just double-checked the par, and it is 175-200 according to my Seneye. It gets this for about 10 hours with a couple of hours of ramp up/down on each end.

Thanks again for your advice. Please let me know if you have any other thoughts.

Thanks for your input! I'm really glad to hear that some have success in saving these. The only experience I have had close to this was with an encrusting monti. It did eventually color up and thrive, so I guess there is hope.

I got an AB this pale from RRU. It held its PE and started to grow/encrust, slowly. The good thing is that it didn’t die.

You’re welcome! Thank you…It’s a beautiful coral.

Thats perfect until it recovers.

I thought I would post an update and see if anyone has any other advice. I don't think it is much different. Maybe the base is a little worse? I have fed it a few times. Holding steady on the light at about 175-200 par for 11 hours a day and less than that for a couple of more hours... Too much? Not enough?

Anyone have any advice? Thanks

That coral will be dead in a month. Ive had a couple pricey tenuis do it from various people. I think it happens because the sellers are dosing certain elements, using supplements you aren't.. If you have success with certain strains of coral from a specific seller/hobbyist-stick with them.
