Well....WELCOME to r2r bud. Not sure on where the regional sections are since I don't go there much but I am sure someone will chime in.

Best advice I can give for new folk to reefing is....take it slow :).

Start by telling us what size tank/lights. That will give everybody an idea of what might be suitable.

Thank you for the help and support, I just started a reef tank, and it is growing. I have a question: rn, my tank has high amounts of nitates and nitrites, and some ammonia. Is the only way to get rid of them to do some water changes? Also, green hair algae has grown, and I got an aiptasia anemone. I purchased some nassarius snails, and some hermit crabs. Think it’ll help? What other cleaners should I put in there? Sorry, it’s a lot of questions. Tank’s been running for about a month and a half.

well no. the tank needs to fully cycle. Meaning Ammonia will get broken down to nitrite by beneficial bacteria. That same bacteria but a different family of it will break down nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate is the safest for a reef tank, but high amounts of it will be devastating. high nitrate is usually 160ppm+. achieve 160ppm+ takes a lot of amount of neglect. However ammonia is toxic to fish and coral. Nitrite can be toxic as well.

Sounds like your tank is still cycling. I would hold off on putting any new livestock in there so the nitrifying bacteria can catch up. One you have no detectable ammonia and nitrite then it would be safe to add a few things at a time.

I have a 10G nano fusion tank w/ a stand and a UV sterilizer.

I think my light came with the nano fusion and is an 18watt light. It has a mixture of blue and white lights.
Your lights a perfect for soft coral! Soft coral are very easy to care for. stress free. LPS can be kept but a light upgrade will be neccessary. SPS is just difficult in general.

I live in Paramus, New Jersey.
Paramus has a really good Petco from what i remember hearing when i worked at one. however a reef club is always the better choice cause well.. some coral are overpriced.

Nitrite is not toxic to fish in saltwater at the levels found in our tanks while cycling. The LC50 was something crazy like 500 IIRC. But I agree, the tank is not cycled if you're getting ammonia and nitrite readings.

OH i will recommend not adding any livestock to the tank. but to keep the bacteria in high boost metabolism sort of state, dose pure ammonia, something with no detergents, ACE usually has one without any additives. Dose no more than a tablespoon or two. then monitor ammonia to nitrite. then to nitrate. everytime ammonia hits 0, dose again. this way it keeps the tank going. Once you have no nitrite. Run a ammonia dose, and if the tank hits 0 on ammonia and 0 on nitrite, you are set. Do a nice big water change and go ahead and add a fish or two. but go easy.

nitrite is toxic..... not as bad as ammonia but nitrite is toxic.

Well, he's already got snails and crabs in there. I wouldn't dose ammonia to a tank with livestock in it.

How much longer do you think everything will be back to normal, and have the cycle completed? It’s been running for a month and a half.
