That is easier, for sure. We used to use yeast and sugar in a 2 liter bottle back when I was wanting to be like Takashi Amano and even bred my own Rummynose and Rams since I had no money back then to afford shoals of them. 
Calcium Reactor is pretty much the only reason to use co2 in a marine setup that I know of... assumed this... sorry.
