Help!

ok it sounds like diatoms to me. how old are the filters on your rodi? chances are your getting silicates from somewhere. in a new tank its the sand and rocks and when all the silicates are gone, the diatom population will stabilize. however, if your rodi unit isn't removing the silicates as well as its supposed to, then youre adding more to the tank and that's why youre getting them.

ok, that's probably your problem. most LFS don't change the filters as often as they should. I suggest investing in a basic rodi unit for your home. you can get them on ebay for 100 bucks and up. I use a 6 stage unit but ignore the idea of stages. my "6 stage" is actually only a 5 stage and really you only need a 4 stage. confusing right lol

I'm not suggesting it's the RODI water from your LFS, but I would agree if you have the means, set up your own. In the long run (which really doesnt take that long) it will pay for itself, with the added benefit of not having to haul jugs back to the house. You will know exactly what you're putting in your system.

Below is a great little system and this, along with a TDS meter, is more than likely all you need. @AZDesertRat is one of the resident water making experts, so maybe he'll chime in.

Yes lol confused me more why don't you lol but I'm going to ask the person from my LFs to see what he says

this is the one I use. very durable build, very good quality, 0tds out with 700+ going in from well water. works great, doesn't cost more than your tank.

the reason I say its actually a 5 stage is because its got 2 small di resin instead of 1 big. its just a gimmick to help them sell. more stages don't mean better in most cases. so this has sediment, carbon, gac ro and di. everything you need and then some.

Why substrate do you use? A few of us here have experienced this problem and we are trying to narrow it down to a cause. So far all of us who have had it use Carib Sea Fiji pink sand.

You know what I'm not 100% sure but I think that's the one I used

If thats a year old tank and thats all you got - good job!

It looks like a little cyano to me...in the flow areas - which means phosphate is up but not too much... relative to nitrate.

I'd keep doing what your doing - wipe it off and add a nem or a coral or two to suck up the excess nutrients. Your clowns would agree.

How do I get rid of that stuff on my glass I wide it off but then a week later comes back.
So the picture reflects a week of growth? After you wipe it off how soon does it look like the picture?

Ok thanks I'll will do that

Many people have this issue & its not the brand of sand that causes the problem. Getting advice to fix the problem is really the sought after answer.
