High ammonia

If I’m not mistaken the api saltwater test kit identification cards say salt and freshwater
Using the same colour chart for both .

no matter what either it’s a testing error or there is ammonia in the system . Both warrant retesting with a reliable test kit .
Thats why i wouldnt know.

Being both from saltwater matter test kits they are both labeled as saltwater ammonia .
The old api kits used to say saltwater and freshwater on a few of the ID cards but I can’t find any

they would be 20+ years old

Salifert is well respected. Look for the kit that test free amonia nh3. That is the one that poses the risk to fish.

If using o total amonia kit higher temps higher ph mean more free amonia per unit of total amonia. Lower temps ph make less free amonia.

Here is a calculator to determin free amonia content.

Awesome. I think this Fluval one is a total ammonia kit. I’m gonna test again and check my Ph. I’ll grab a Salifert ammonia kit soon (probably today)

8 8.4 is ideal. its just that at lower ph and lower temperatures the free ammonia content decreases in relation to tatal ammonia.

Certainly looks like you have had a recent blip in ammonia. I would use that as an excuse to double check your circulation, heating and salinity. You got a pic of the tank?
yep. lord, haha. Temp is is 80.00 exactly. Salinity 1.026, 35, nitrite 0, nitrate is below 5, pump and wave maker are running. the skimmer is running too but I’m considering taking it out for now, just doing consistent water changes.

More rock will be good. If it’s damp rock, shipped to you, there may be a bit of die off. Another little blip could then be expected but the overall ammonia handling would be enhanced in the long term. If you ain’t got the heater on a controller, I would suggest that too. Happy reefin

Thank you! Heater is on a controller. Consistently stays around 80.00, 80.3. happy reefin! and thanks for all the help.
