I bought the Hanna nitrate colorimeter and the Red Sea Iodine pro reagents to test the iodine level. After performing the test and doing the math, the iodine was 0.0232.

@SBB Corals What iodine range are you looking to maintain?

I thought it was the Hanna NITRITE checker that you need, maybe that's why your number is so far off.

My bad. It is the nitrite checker (the reddish-orange one) and my reading after doing the test was 529.

529x-0.0003292492 = -0.1741728268
-0.1741728268 + 0.1973653 = 0.023192473 ppm Iodine

My last ICP from ATI back in May had an iodine level of 20.01 µg/l, or 0.02001 ppm. I have been dosing it occasionally but definitely didn't want to overdose. Now that I have the colorimeter and reagents, I will check it more often and get it squared away.

Yeah. Definitely need to raise it some. I knew it was low and didn't have a way to test so I was sparingly dosing. It was obviously very sparingly as it barely raised. Better than overdosing I guess.

It can overdose quick. I found that only about 0.5ml every other week of Seachem Iodide in my 120-gallon tank, keeps me in the 80's. So it is only several "drops" of iodide needed.

Good point. I don't dose KZ1234, but I do dose KZ Flatworm Stop, just for the health of the acros, as I don't have any flatworms. Now that you mention it, I remember a thread in here somewhere saying that it may contain iodine.

You know more about it than I do.

Just thought I would point out if anyone is dosing something else that might contain iodine to take it super super slow. People who dose iodine only do a fraction of the recommended dosage already it seems.

It does. I just started dosing it for the same reasons, health (no flatworms). I’m unsure if I see a net benefit yet, on the second week.

I also dose Aquavitro Fuel which does have iodine in it.

Would that be okay to dose. Tank total water is about 180 gallons. I was thinking 1 drop per week to keep in up a bit. Thoughts?

Lugol's contains potassium iodide and iodine. The iodine breaks down to iodate and iodide. Iodate can cause problems a lot faster.

This is the reason people say to use Seachem or Kent Marine, something that contains iodide only.

I use Lugol's at 2 drops/week, I have definitely noticed more pinks and reds in zoas and Acros.

Too much of any iodine, iodate, iodide, will wipe out your tank. Starting at 1/4 or even 1/10 of the recommended dosage would be best.

Test test test for it. Using the Hanna Nitrite is the best method. Going on 1/10 the dose though and you have a healthy stocked system there is probably no chance of ODing.

I have a whole bottle and using it at a very low level, I add it to the sump at 2 drops a week, not enough for iodate to build up before it oxidizes.

A lot of people use it and have no problems, I think people that had issues followed the 1 drop per day/35 gallons. Though it does say "maximum" recommended dose, I have read many post of people using that dosage.

When I run out I will switch, but till then I will low dose it.
