High PO4 - SPS Polyp retraction

hey guys

Well.. unlucky and somehow I learned something..
my Hanna ULR Phosphate checker was somehow always stating PO4 0.00 and I was also having a slight dino outbreak on the sand (just a few strains on the sand only).
So I was dosing PO4 and feeding more.. I didnt dose alot of PO4 as ATI Nutrition is only to "feed" PO4 and not to raise somehow.

Ok, I was dosing for 2 weeks daily 0.3ml (as per instructions from ATI) and my Hanna ULR Checker (ppm) always said 0.00

So, today I received my Hanna Phosphorus ULR (ppb) checker and now this one shows 139 and 147 second test. That would somehow read 0.4 ppm po4 right??

My SPS are sturggling for a few days and polyps (espacially pocilloporas) are always retracted...

Does high po4 make SPS to now show polyps? My Montis look good, its only the pocillos and my LPS also are now open as they usually are...

Now I did another test with Fauna Marin PO4. And I guess this one also shows higher results..

what would you do?

I could add like 2 tablespoons of RowaPhos but doent want to cause Dinos...

That is high as you know. I would do A 30-40% water change and add a pouch of chemipure elite which will lower phosphate and keep it in check. Same with nitrate
It will also remove any toxins if present

Well my 120 has gone as high as .4 with no issues at all.
I used a combo of gfo, phosgaurd, and carbon.
I am now running no po4 agents as my fuge takes care of po4 now.

I would slowly reduce using a po4 reducer. Your on the right path just go slow, 2 table spoons sounds good. I would monitor po4 daily while reducing.
A WC will help too but You dont want to reduce po4 to fast.

Removing the RowaPhos after 1 day and check where my PO4 is.

But I guess the most accurate checker is the Phosphorus ULR ppb, is that correct?

I dont want to lower po4 too fast tbh, but 40% woulnt be an issue I hope.

Yea I use the same.
Make sure you check po4 after your WC.
A 40% WC could reduce po4 almost in half so check po4 after.
If it was my system I would add the po4 agent and monitor your levels. A 10% might make more sense.
 
yeah.. i am not sure.. my concern is if my biology will getting knocked out with such a high WC..
or doesnt that hurt anythying bacteria wise etc?

So long as you're matching your basic params of Temp / Sal & Hardness; unlikely

Edit: I've done a few 50%-ers when I had an aluminium trace spike (filings from putting the lid together got in the tank)
 
If your vials were clean of drips and spots and you followed the directions, you can trust the Hannah.

Remember that the rocks/sand will unbind po4 as soon as you start removing it from the water.

Lowering will go fine if you go slow. Never stop feeding your fish since that fish waste will give the corals nitrogen and phosphorous still... up the export, do not slow down the import.

Yeah.. I did clean the vials on each step with a clean paper towel. So there were no fingerprints or such - I did very serious.

Well, actually in this tank there are no fish. So, I still do ghost feed the tank with frozen and pellets. Frozen just whats left after feeding the QT tank.

So basically you wouldnt do a large WC like 30% then?
 
Water changes are always good. They are not effective at removing much po4 unless the number is really low - the bound po4 in the aragonite is massively more than what is in the water column.

If you don't have any fish, look to Ammonium to supply nitrogen and po4 beyond 5 ppb is not necessary.

well I did some WC and run RowaPhos for 12 hrs now.

Now Po4 is 72ppb

I will just keep ghost feeding and remove rowaphos now. Or would you remove rowaphos after sleeping?

I dont want to lower to fast…
