hey guys, another leason learned this week in the wonderful world of reefing. I have a few sps frags, one green birdsnest, one purple stylo, and one no name acro. I recently had an explosion of growth and as a result i had started dosing a lot of 2 part. I totally forgot to check salinity for a little over a week and it shot up to about 39 ppt. My tank is only 20 gal and it was a bit on the higher side to begin with. Well i brought it down slowly this weekend while trying to keep everything else in check. My beloved birdsnest and stylo have lost some polyps but were looking better today. The acro seems unphased! My lps and softies are coming around as well. Is there a chance the birdsnest and stylo can recover from the tissue loss? Its not terrible but they deffinitely look stressed. On a side note the birdsnest and stylo had been in the tank much longer than the acro, is it possible the birdsnest and stylo took it harder than the acro because they were well established in my tank? Do i try and frag my frags to save them or should i just keep steady and hold everything as stable as possible and wait it out? Thanks!

why did your salinity shout up?

ESV 2 part plus RS Mag, all of which will raise salinity. My tank has been sucking down alk like crazzy. I was seeing growth daily, especially on my chalice. I also suspect i might have some abiotic precipitation, so i was slowly trying to bring my mag up from 1200 ppm. Lesson learned though. I will check salinity every other day now! Atleast until i establish a trend!

I had no idea 2 part could do that. I found a old thread about it. I wonder how many tanks are noticeably affected in that matter and in what rate

Most of the time people wont even notice with larger tanks because the sheer volume of water, the skimmer pulling saltwater, and water changes correcting for it. But in a nano everything i add has an impact!

Salinity is the only parameter I test for. It's one of the easily overlooked parts of tank maintenance that leads to issues. I would say hold off on the corals and see how they do. BN and Stylo will both retract polyps to where it looks like they're dead when there's a big swing in salinity. If the area is stark white then it's dead and that area probably won't recover.

How much do you dose daily? And how do you usually control salinity, ATO?

Im dosing about 20 ml of each part of the ESV 2 part. I break it up 3 times a day but i just got a doser this weekend, i will be hooking that up soon! I do have an ATO and thats part of the reason im lazy with checking salinity. Its been incredibly stable for the 6 months i have had it... i have slowly increased the 2 part with regular testing over the past few months. I have a feeling im getting some precipitation but its hard to say because i was literally seeing daily growth...

They both will totally recover and grow over the dead portions as long as you keep all parameters solid and no algae grows over the skeletons. If it is a large portion of exposed skeleton it is usually faster to cut the death out then wait for it to grow back over.

Thanks. Im going to wait it out and see what happens.
