My new hippo in QT tank is swimming vertical instead of horizontal. His tail looks smaller than it was and I see red on the tip. Should I be concerned? Just did a 10 percent water change.

Could you maybe get a photo or two? Of both the fish overall and as clear as possible of the tail?

Photos of the tail and a video of the behavior would be helpful for us to better assist you.

Still trying to figure out how to post video from my phone...

His tail isn’t smaller, it’s all but gone :(
That would explain why he is having difficulty swimming.

This fish needs immediate antibiotic treatment. I would start with a 90-minute acriflavine bath, followed by the trifecta kanaplex + furan-2 + metroplex in QT for 10-14 days.

If you have it, or can get it quickly, NFG is an excellent antibiotic that also contains an antiseptic. But, I wouldn’t wait... I would start treating him ASAP with whichever option you can source quicker.

So I cant get the video to post but he has been in this 60-80 degrees from horizontal position for a day and wont really come out of this corner. Didn't go after LRS food when I put a little in. He also was eating herbivore pellet food and he doesn't seem to be interested in than at the moment.

From SWF.com he came at 22.5 ppt(1.017) salinity. I keep my tank at 35 ppt(1.026) Have been slowly adding tank water to get salinity up as I quarantine for a month.

i would call them and tell them you want your $$ back for sending you a fish with no tail lol.....im serious tho

Oh, no he was in great shape upon delivery in a hypo-salinic 1.017 water, just as I raised the salinity be to my normal tank level this infection has broken out. I see it as justification for doing a 30 day QT before going into my display tank. Treating with meds borrowed from a great community member brew12.

I found the Ruby reef rally on Amazon prime so I can get it here by Tuesday. Problem is it only comes in a 64 oz bottle. Any value in getting this much? I am hearing it is reef safe but not recommended to dose DT? I am thinking my problems with my hippo in QT are actually caused by adding DT water to QT to raise salinity. I believe my current fish have built up a good immunity. Any value in dosing DT?

Thanks for the support, he didn't make it thru the night.

So what should I have done differently?

Is this a bacterial infection?

FYI, they are giving me store credit, but I am going to by some yellow tails and pretent they are a school of hippos

Most definitely a bacterial infection, likely gram-negative. They are incredibly fast-moving. It’s good that you have the supplies coming to have in hand for the future.

These kind of infections usually need to be treated the day before we notice them :/ so even if you act immediately they don’t always pull through. Sorry for the loss...

So I have given my QT set up a bleach scrubbing. Should I treat DT with reef rally? My original fish and new sailfin are not showing any signs of issues. I am worried any new fish are going to battle this bacteria if it is in my DT.
