Hippo Tang in QT

I wouldn’t no. It is said to be “reef safe” but I only use it as a bath or dip personally. I don’t think there would be much benefit to adding it to your DT, especially since it seems to degrade pretty quickly even in a bare-bones QT.

If none of your other fish are showing symptoms I’d try not to worry. Sometimes bacterial infections are very contagious, and sometimes it’s just a wound or parasite bite that becomes infected and the rest of the community isn’t affected at all.

But, if you plan to QT moving forward, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to at least fw dip one of your existing fish to check for flukes. You could also do a black molly test to see if you have anything lurking in there.

I did freshwater my new sailfin that survived QT. I really like the freshwater Molly idea. Thanks for suggesting it.

Gonna freshwater dip my damsel to check for flukes, but this hippo died from a bacterial infection. If I do the Mollie test and confirm there are nasties in my tank water where does that leave me? Going fallow is really not an option so I would either not get any new fish or hope new fish can build an immunity.

Bleaching will bo ok, but not necessary; that fish was bullied having its tail bitten off little by little, that is where the red color comes from bruising...there is probably nothing wrong with your tank; bleach will kill all bacteria because bleaching the tank alone will do no good...The filter, and whatever else is in the tank would have to be bleached...Honestly I think your tank is fine.

Only if he was biting himself...He was newly arrived and the only fish in the quarantine tank. I had been adding display tank water to up the salinity. Either he was shipped with a bacterial infection or it came from my system. He lived in my QT for 2 weeks, saw signs of the infection at day 11. He was eating good when he first arrived. Most of my current fish came from another tank teardown so I don't know what kind of QT they ever had, but didn't before putting them in my system. I just added a sailfin tang before received this guy. Went thru 30 days of QT, but the 3 other fish with him did not survive same QT.
