I have a blue tang that has a sore or discoloration along the head.

I recently dosed Flatworm Exit and followed the directions but did a 1.5x dosage. As part of that, I treated the tank with 2lbs of carbon for the last 24 hours.

Could this have caused HLLE or did my blue tang just decide to bash his head in as a result of mild toxin exposure during the treatment?

I have never seen HLLE come on so quickly.

I would encourage your check you nitrate and phosphate levels.

There appears/per the video some aggression going on among the tangs. I realize they are feeding but one tang in particular seems to be messing with blue.

I also had a poly filter running for the last 20 hours or so.

All of the fish freaked out after the flatworm exit treatment from the toxins released.

Anything you would recommend for the hostility? Should I hang a mirror so the tangs show their reflections some aggression instead?

Testing nitrate and phosphate now

You could certainly try a mirror. Unfortunately some fish develop into fish that do not play well with others and pick a target fish (pecking order). Do you see the aggression between the two as chronic?

It has become more noticeable after treatment otherwise it is only seen during feeding. Otherwise they are typically model roommates.

You could always remove the blue and put him in a temporary tank for a few days this also allows you to treat what it has, then do a bit of rescaping before replacing.

Nitrate is really low (likely because of the poly filter and carbon)

0.00-0.25 using Red Sea Pro

Phosphate using Red Sea Pro kit is

0.00 - 0.02 but the colors don't seem to match up very well. The tested solution comes in at a more yellowish color where the yellows are more bland on the comparison chart.

My rock is puttied together with epoxy and acrylic. No chance unfortunately.

Verified the nitrate test once again.

If it helps you feel better, that's not HLLE. It looks like an injury, though I'm not sure from what. Keep an eye on it. If you don't already, add vitamins like Selcon or Vitachem to their foods to help boost his immune system. We dont' want the injury to get infected.

Thanks @melypr1985 that does make me feel better and also helps me treat it. Here is a better view at the end of the video

Yeah, that looks like she darted into the rocks and scraped the top of her head on the rocks. Probably sucks for her, but with some care, she will heal.

Good luck on your tang, I hope it gets better.

How are your corals doing after 2 lbs of carbon? What kind of carbon? I'm just curious. Thanks.

Unfortunately I decided to use Marineland carbon as it was available at the lfs.

Corals are doing fine but figuring out ways to increase nitrates now to 3-5ppm

All carbon and filter pads are offline now.

The only time ive seen that happen is when i got the idea to try and fight algae using fluval clearmax..

My blue hippo had hlle almost immediately...

FWIW, marineland black diamond doesnt cause hlle. Many reefers including Randy Holmes used black diamond up till 4 or 5 years ago. I still use it in some of my low stock tanks
