Well, another Christmas and Hanukkah have come and gone, and maybe you received the gift that you always wanted.

Or, maybe not.

Maybe, just maybe, someone you know decided to get you a coral for the Holiday. On the surface, this is a really nice gesture- a thoughtful idea for the reefer in the household….Only problem is, usually the person buying the gift is NOT a reefer, and typically has no clue about what’s involved in stocking and maintaining a reef tank.

"Your Uncle and I know you love the fishes, and this one reminded us of the ones you see when you swim in the ocean!"

What this means to you is that , despite the fact that your collection consists entirely of rare Acans, you’re now the proud owner of a large Green Nepthea! Or, your docile Anthias species tank now has to host a “cute†baby Sweetlips (“The guy at the store said he was super tame!â€)! Or, the off-brand Chinese-made combination lighted electric siphon hose/algae scrubber device (that's not UL-approved, of course) will now forever be a part of your equipment collection...Or maybe you received a pair of African Cichlids for a "gift" (yeah, it happened to me once)! You get the picture.

"He's so cute, and he's eating pellets!"

Gift cards look away more attractive now, huh?

"That plant would look so nice in your fish tank, so we just had to get it for you!"

Much like the fruitcake of holiday legend, there must have been that one reef-related gift you received- a fish, coral, or piece of equipment- that totally came from left field, and, despite the best intentions of the giver, turned into a pretty serious headache for you.

"I got it on e-Bay for you...It's gonna really help you do that stuff you do with your tank- and it works in European electrical outlets, too!"

Did you end up keeping the fishy fruitcake, or did you somehow manage to trade it back for some hermit crabs and 4 packs of frozen food? And, how did you manage that feat?

Or, did this gift somehow work out and turn into something that you actually kept and enjoyed?

Let’s hear your “gift that keeps on giving†stories! There's a $25 UC "Virtual Gift Card" for the best story!

Keep an eye peeled on this forum later today for an announcement about our New Year's event, and stop back in next week for an all-new rant by yours truly!

Happy Holidays!

Actually I lucked out.....i got a gift card to brs.....then a visa card and some cash to spend on corals or fish, my fiancee and family rock!!

Hope others made out as well as I did!

Didn't get anything reef related but my wife did friend the LFS owner where I get a good majority of my corals on Facebook because she thought about asking him what coral to get me.

Well my story isn't reef related but alot like your incident Scott I received a beautiful Flowerhorn about five years ago and the only tank I had Freshwater was my Planted Discus tank. It was a stressful few hours as I had to fix a make shift setup from spare aquarium parts and an old 55g tank that I had in storage. After all was said and done the Flowerhorn had a home for a few weeks until I could make him a more appealing setup. I ended up keeping the fish and loving every minute of its presence until last year when unstable rockwork claimed its life while I was at work. At first I though this was a bad situation but it turned out great thankfully.

I got a lovely pair of Bartlett's anthias from my hubby...and then my hubby left me T-T

The nem from my mom didn't work out so well, either...

Oh, I got a good one this year. My mother-inlaw order a fish online for me. It arrived on the 20th and she thought it would be ok in the bag for five days. Yikes. Well it didn't make it. She has tried this in past but I was able to stop her before she was able to buy anything and even told her that I could only keep certain fish. Not the pretty ones. Hopefully she has learned now.

well, it's not the story of having to deal with an unwanted creature for my tank, but my wife and family definitely figured out what I like. My family all got me gift cards to the lfs and my wife totally surprised me with an atypical aquarium stand for my new tank! Going for that vintage industrial look.

It slipped my mind - tuna_bullet should get a gift card cuz (he/she?) totally made my day with a 100g acrylic gift tank ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡ I get to go get it Thursday!!!

I was given $'s to get a used chiller and a used light fixture that I needed badly. Also my gf allowed me to pick several items oN BRS and ordered them and got to open and use them Christmas day! What a blast.

And to those that just gave gifts and didn't receive...that to me is a true gift...hopefully karma will find ita way to you all in a great way!

I think this story counts: My sister in law showed up for the holidays (from AZ) presenting her sick Betta to me. OK… I am a doctor and I keep a reef tank so I guess there is logic there…LOL… no judgement… I know nothing about Bettas but I did start with buying a clean new tank with lights and filtration. (It was in a yicky bowl…) I also read up on medicating what I think is tail rot and also a fungal infection. So I am treating him (his name is Brandon) and he is pulling through…
Oh and this is a gift cause I am keeping him so I can care for him properly….

My boyfriend decided to surprise me with the 7" clown trigger that was at the LFS for my 75 gallon FOWLR. Thankfully because I was sick he left it at the store until I was well again so I was able to switch it for a gift certificate instead, plus the 4" undulated trigger thats been there for the past 7 months. He now happily has the 75 to himself and I have money to fill my other tanks (lost all my previous fish in a move). And on top of that my boyfriends learning what can actually go into my tanks and is helping me to pick out suitable fish.

I got a gift card to an LFS, and got cash to pay off all of the live rock, CUC, initial fish, and initial corals I have bought over the past few months on credit :-)

Well I had to be gone for Christmas for over a week and since it was winter my tank evaporates more than what my top off provides for a whole week. I rigged up a temporary top off system with a much larger reservoir a week before I left to make sure everything was working, of course it worked fine while I was home.. . Well when I got back home my Christmas gift was the return for the top off slipped out of the sump at sometime spraying all over the bottom of the stand. I double checked before I left to even make sure it was secure. The sump ran dry and the worst thing is I turned the house temps down. Well today the temp was still not up to par because one of the two heaters fried, the controller part must have got wet.. Be a few days to see if there are losses but most of the corals were closed up and the fish lethargic. A few corals had lost their color. Temps got down too 66… Great christmas gift there :( .

Best news is I got a pair of Kaudern's Cardinal fish to breed from my girlfriend for Christmas just before we left and I had put them in the frag system till the breeder system is built and not thankfully in the main tank.

My mother in law knows I love my reef tank, so for christmas this year she went to the Walmart and bought me some fish, 2 african cichlids, a pleco, and some glofish, and some flourescent rocks to put in with my plain old white substrate, and some fake plants, cause a tank doesnt look right without plants. she also got me a betta and a couple cans of Tetra flakes. I now have a 5 gal bucket I used to mix water in full of fish I do not want that I can not return.
