You could make that a peppermint shrimp training ground, they will learn to eat them, or they will get suffocated.

The problem is, the peppermint shrimp won't be hungry for awhile after clearing that up.

I'm looking at the price of Berghia Nudibranchs. I think I can get rich by buying 5, putting them in my overflow and then harvesting 100's after a month! I think they will be big, fat and healthy ;)

Berghia Nudibranchs do not like flow and would get lost.

My bean animal overflow has been behaving a little peculiarly, so I decided to poke around my overflow box and this is what I found...
I have a few of them in my DT, but NOTHING like what is in my overflow!!! In the past, I've used AptasiaX to successfully control them in my DT. I am planning on getting a Copperband Butterfly to help with the DT (plus, I just love the fish and I've always wanted one).

I guess it's reasonable to assume that the aptasia in my overflow is helping with nutrient export. So my plan is:

1. Regularly clear out the aptasia near my bean animal intakes
2. Leave the rest in my overflow as nutrient export
3. Get a CBB for my DT

Comments, concerns, other ideas???
TIA,
John
I have found hundreds in my overflow before. I was so mad cuz was constantly killing them in my display. I ended up capping the bottom tube and pouring bleach down the overflow. Let it sit for an hour. Drained it and rinsed it with di several times.

I have some growing in my CPR HOB overflow, hardly any in my DT, peppermint shrimp are controlling them in there. I clean the overflow but I can’t reach the whole area

Get a peppermint shrimp they said, it will eat those pest anemones they said.

Good luck, john

I took a peek down my overflow with a durso standpipe a few months ago (some algae was clogging up the standpipe), and holy moly - I also had a similar aiptasia garden going on.

I'm considering removing the standpipe and turning off the return pump for a weekend to see if drying them out for 48 hours will work to kill them. However, I've yet to do this and haven't had any major outbreak in the DT- this garden has probably been there for many, many months.

Currently, I don't think I have any aiptasia in the main tank that I'm aware of. When I do see one pop up, I aiptasia X it and then thoroughly cover with super glue and epoxy. This system seems to be working out well as long as the hole gets covered thoroughly with super glue/epoxy.

But knowing that garden is there definitely gives me the heebie jeebies that a bad outbreak could happen again. On the other hand, I don't want to try and chemically eradicate them as all that'll do is anger them and almost guarantee more pop up in the DT (based on my previous experiences with mass chemical eradication) . Hence, I might just to dry them out at some point.

I have similar concerns. I am going to try B. Nudis, even though they don't like flow. I will put some in the overflow and some in my DT. If they Nudis in my overflow don't clear it out, I'll regularly harvest a nem or two and feed the Nudis in my DT with the harvested Aiptasia.

That is one scary situation. I would skip the CBB. Get a larger butterfly like a raccoon that will actually eat them.

Something has to be keeping them in control in your DT! What fish/inverts do you have?

I have a similar situation in my tank except with bubble algae and GHA. When I cleaned them off today you couldn't see the tops of the three drain pipes for the GHA and the waterline is covered in bubble algae. In the tank there is zero but I know why...I have a Gold Rim tang that loves GHA and bubble algae. I'm thinking about renting him out to supplement my retirement fund! :D
When you mess with bubble Algae when they pop the same thing happens yoyu hd one then you have 1000 of them I would never clean the overflow while it was connected Aptasia or bubble algae while connected to display or anyother taank. I have a Clarks Butterfly he keeps any aptasia that may get in the tnk in check cleaned up!

Nudi's good sized ones cost to much $$$$$$$ and take forever to clean them up when small unless u have a ton of them. However they do a fantastic job and breed, good to pass on to fllow reefers that have the same issue as Aptasia is the only thing they eat!

Someone posted not too long ago that research had shown that only the large mature bubbles of bubble algae have spores in them. The very small ones like I have don't seem to cause any spores to be released. If they do they are pretty large because there is no bubble algae in the sump and the only thing stopping it is my filter socks.
