Does anyone else make their own food. I have 3 variations. I feed once a day. They will get 2 to 3 cubes per feeding. And I used RODI water to dice it all together. My

1. Scallops with seaweed, dry rotifers, selcon, dry calanus and dried mysis shrimp.

2. Shrimp with everything mentioned

3. Frozen Clams that will get sliced and dipped with selcon that will be once a week treat

i started making mine in october 2022. Spent $30 at an Asian market - salmon, krill, squid and one other item I am forgetting. I had shrimp, scallops and sea weed here. Food processor chipped away, added some reef chilly and froze it in ice cube trays. Pieces are large - I cut them into 1/4's and feed 2x daily. That initial investment is still feeding this tank (200g total) and probably enough to make 1 more batch for a total of 3 batches. First batch lasted 2 months. Way cheaper than buying prepared foods for sure.

Yea reef chilly will be my next item to add. I don't have any at the moment.

These cubes are super tiny, but I don't have to worry about rinsing them or wondering what's in it. I have a frozen food holder in the tank so throw 2 blocks in and maybe target feed a little and we're in business. I figured I'd do a variety and feed shrimp and scallops on alternating days to switch up the diet

I use the BRS frozen reef chili for reef and small mouth fish. Made 8 lbs for about 90$. It should last me forever at around 1/2 cube per day.

Im about to do this. I made my first herbivore blend and tangs love it !!
With cube packs approaching $10 each, its time to send a strong message to those companies !!

The scallops were 5 bucks...I used a 1/4 cup of mysis shrimp and calanus...sprinkled a dash of rotifers and 4 squirts of selcon. Added the rodi to help liquefy it and added 4 sheets of seaweed to help bind everything.

Tomorrow I'll make the shrimp edition.

After the first yield the Houdini packs aren't that easy to get the food out.

Looking at these instead.

I am interested in making my own. I have tangs, puffer, flame angel, rose bubble to anemone, chromis, coral beauty and starfish. In addition to the fish being blended- what else should I add and what recommendations do you have for mixing it up and adding the “veggie mix” if you will- what size cube trays do you all prefer? Thanks! I’m rather new to the idea of fully engaging in the hobby and trying to learn. Thanks!

Are people using food processors to digest everything together? Doesn’t that make it too pasty and not chunky at all?

It depends on the size blades used in it. Mine would be chopped up into rice size pieces

I'd get a mix of dried seaweed other than typical roasted green nori. Ocean nutrition sells a red seaweed sheet and two little fishes has purple. Dried, not roasted, might be neat. Make sure the seafood you use doesn't contain preservatives like trisodium phosphate. Cooked should be fine if you end up with some of that in your mix (as lots of seafood medleys have some cooked items). I liked adding dried calanus to my mix. Baby brine shrimp might be nice if you want a coral food fish food combo.

Tray size is up to you but the small mini cube rubber trays were a pain imo. You could even freeze it flat into a bag then vacuum seal it and skip cubes all together.

It's so cool to see other DIY food makers here. Your variations sound amazing. That extra kick of flavor must make it absolutely delicious! Feeding once a day with 2 to 3 cubes per feeding sounds like a great routine too.

Btw, have you tried making pico de gallo? Just curious.
