HOTB OverFlow Recommendations

You just have to keep the prefilter clean. If you're running it high up to keep the syphon going, the prefilter would be the only thing to jam it up and overflow.

I never ran a HOB overflow, but based on brand quality, I would check out CPR. They used to be a high end, huge player in the industry. They make a lot less stuff now for some reason, but what they make is quality.

So I installed my CPR AQUATIC OVERFLOW WITH LIFTER PUMP. it's freaking super quiet. It's siphon break safe. It's stunning on my tank. Honestly eshopps are horrible compared to it. I had a eshopps 1200 gargling, broke siphon a few times. (My toddler learned to lift the tubes also) but that was my issue. But honestly if you can afford the extra 60$ DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Lifereef is the only HOB overflow I'd ever consider. Do you really want to rely on a crappy little pump to restart the siphon as one does on the CPR? I know I wouldn't.

That's one of the reasons I didn't pick the CPR, that and I didn't need another cord added to the spaghetti that's back there now. Going on three years with the eshopps HOB and never had a siphon break, never have bubbles accumulate in the U-tube at all and the siphon starts right back up again after a power failure. The only way my tank could flood is if there was ever a siphon break the return section runs dry and the ATO would keep pumping water into that section, but I don't think the ATO holds enough water to flood the tank. It doesn't matter anyway because I have a fail safe if that happens, the sensor shuts everything down if the return section runs dry and I get an alert.

My pump shuts down daily for my afs cycle and my lifereef overflow has never lost syphon. I also do biweekly Water changes and it starts right up every time I restart my pump. Imo, having a siphon dependant on a aqualifter just adds another point of failure I don't need.

Interesting point...

These are all the things I needed to hear to consider... I am being groomed into a true reef keeper, one R2R thread at a time. ;Bookworm;Bookworm;Bookworm

My overflow box sounded like a toilet flushing all day and night. I used 2 valves at the bottom of my Eshopps to make it run near silent. I love this overflow box. Never has it lost siphon. I also fabricated a plexiglass lid to keep dust, dog hair, and bugs out. It also quiets it down a little too.
