Candy Apple Red = Hephaestus = Bowser. But for some reason the prices are not the same.

[/QUOTE]

They are not even remotely the same. You might think this because youve only seen them in pictures but I 100% guarantee you they are very different as I have them all. You also have to remember these pricier zoas are collectors items. They're price isnt determined by how pretty they are or what other zoas they look like. Their price is set by demand and newer more rare zoas have far less supply so the price is higher. As a zoa becomes spread around the price will drop depending on how fast it grows and how hardy it is. This is why corals like hallucinations and bloodshots have stayed at $100PP for a decade. Because they're hot, grow slow, and melt often...

Heres the thing.

If I import a half dozen rocks of eagle eye type zoas, there are gonna be slight variations among them. One will have a longer skirt, one will have some interesting white speckling on it, one will be a little more yellowish green than green.

So yeah there are tiny differences but theyre all eagle eyes. Nobody wants to spend money on a newly named "extra long skirt eagle eye" -- or worse, a "whammin watermelon" or "super sayan", then find out its essentially the same as the eagle eyes already in their collection.

Same with the three I mentioned. Different names, but all close enough to the same thing. Now my eagle eye example was silly because aside from a few notorious vendors, most sellers are sensible enough to say "this is just a slight variation on eagle eyes, I'm not gonna try to fool anyone".

But people do it all day long with candy apple reds and sunny Ds, each of which exists in the hobby with a half dozen different names ... but when I buy them and put them side by side, they're effectively identical. I wish people would just spend some time searching to see if their new zoa already has a name, before giving it a new one just because that particular polyp has a slightly different shade of green or a few white speckles.
Yeah but variations can make things different to an extent... bounce mushrooms are mutations that cause cancer postures to form on rhodactis mushrooms significantly increasing price.... even though it’s not like that with zoas (if it ever happens that’ll be nuts lol) a mutation in a zoanthid has the possibility to create a whole new strain... and just because things look similar doesn’t mean it’s the same, eagle eye zoanthids have a red base with a green skirt, super saiyens have a yellow skirt with an orange base completely diff... now whammin watermelons are stupid because yeah they’re eagle eyes... and if there were a way to stop stores from renaming then I’m all for it because I hate that, when my store tries to do that I tell them no, show them the real name and I fix it, but I as a collector am all for finding differences and recognizing a significant difference as a different strain of polyp... just my 2 cents lol

what do you mean by strain? there are probably less then 9-12 species of zoa now days with sibling species added in we have approx ?10? more. Species that have siblings are only identified by where they were collected thus the sibling verbiage. Otherwise they are the same. This is being studied as I type this by Reimer for example.

The whole color morph thing is absolutely endless as far as I can tell especially when you add in stress events and other things that can change the colors.

You are basically collecting something that has no end as far as I can tell. The money aspect of the hobby will constantly pump out the next hotness forever since the amount of morphs and variations are almost endless.

so when you say whammin whatever is stupid when it is really an eagle eye.. the whole argument sounds silly right from the get go. You guys are just sitting around giving names to probably a whole 6-7 species color morphs again and again and again. Endless marketing names for endless amounts of morphs which in reality are probably 6 species.

It will be interesting to see a real evolution in the discussion of zoanthus because what you have today is pure 100% marketing. The main folks selling these creatures are basically telling you what is "good" and "bad" based on price. When everyone has the "good" it is now "bad".. and they will create the next "good" one.

I am not saying this is just a zoa problem. It is ridiculous with sticks as well. Just how many silly names can people give to acropora millepora is equally stupid.

Discussing morphs is pointless. Varieties that have been consistently aquacultured and documented (aka given a ludicrous name) is what we are talking about. They arent all shifting and morphin and changing all the time. A rainbow incinerator is a rainbow incinerator. Can it morph? Of course. Is it still a rainbow incinerator? yes absolutely. Over time they almost always come back to what they were. Only a few polyps seem to hold morphs long term.

The names are part of the game. If you want to buy "acropora millepora" and dont really care what the coral that arrives looks like, then you can do that. But if not we need the names to identify the varieties. Also a morph and a variety do not constitute the same thing. There may be only 6 species but that does not mean they are all the same thing. Theyre nomenclature and genealogy is not what we are interested in, its the colors.

Hey, if others want to talk about naming or morphs, can you start a new thread?

Let's just agree that prices <> zoa "prettiness", but prices are more related to supply and demand (real or manufactured). I think some of the prettiest zoas are sunny Ds and eagles eyes. And they are cheap, cheap, cheap.

I just want to see what people think are hot zoas, and the pictures of said zoas, especially pics. No judgement on prices or beauty of the zoas, just what people think are hot. I was really enjoying this thread before.

Let's see those hot zoa pics.

This. I wish there was more pushback against renaming. If it already has a name, just use that name!

Candy Apple Red = Hephaestus = Bowser. But for some reason the prices are not the same.

But even aside from prices, whats frustrating as a collector is when you buy a frag of what is supposedly a new type and found out its the same as a type already in your collection under a different name.

They are not the same. Similar, but different.

I can’t believe this thread is a year old already.
Have any of you guys seen acid trip zoa from Jason fox? I really like this one too. It’s kind of like an Illuminati.

It's a neat one. I saw a juvenile polyp and I thought it was an OG night fury for a moment.

I’m gonna be releasing some solar circus when I get back from vacation. Here’s before I cut them. One of my favorites for sure and they won’t last long. Nothing comes close to these.
