Let's see???? Black box vs big name lights. The way I see it? Black boxes are for people that want, but can't afford. In my eyes that's not the way to go about success with anything. I run 2 Mitras lx7. I like the extras. I like thunderstorms, I like clouds, I like ramp up and ramp down. Most of all I like sleeping at night and not having to worry that my Chinese lights aren't going to fail on me.
After all we are replicating nature here. Nature has thunderstorms, clouds, etc. If I can't afford to give my critters the best then why should I do it??? I'm not cutting corners with my livestock. Argue all you want! That's the bottom line.

Walking isn't a hobby. This is! We are replicating nature for the survival of something we have comp!ete control over. This is not an argument. Do some soul searching.

I have been talking to him behind the scenes of this thread about the necessary equipment needed to take care of his animals. He is more than willing to do things correctly.

Please don't get me wrong! There's a heck of a lot of threads about black boxes. It appears to me the ones that have them disdain the ones that can afford the name brand lights. And Visa versa. All I did was state an opinion. It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it, just like your entitled to yours. I'm not going to argue the fact! I'm going to do what I think is right. I have 1000$ in brand new MH sitting in boxes. I have no problem with the heat nor the power used. I got back from a buddies house for truck parts. He has 2 over a 55 gallon. Guess what. I ordered mars aqua and will be running them. The MH will be used on my sump or grow out.

To achieve the same par and coverage with an Ai , it’s $2700+
You couldn’t fit enough a80s to get the same par. You’d need 6 a160s.
I run the BBS at 40%.

I went big and spent $275 for the ramping model for the cube.

It’s 180 par on the sand.
You’d need an Ai hydra or radion xe 30 to do that. Or two(maybe 3) kessil 360.

A plain Jane mars aqua can be found for 89.

Black boxes are just fine you'll see lots of threads of people with beautiful tanks that use them and have had plenty of success. My first black box was an SB Reef that I've had for 4 year's and still running strong the other two I have are the bloomspect black boxes you can get off Amazon they work great have built-in timers and use a single cord instead of two like most others plus they have a better heatsink than my SB Reef

you guys have all given me full confidence in purchasing one so i have, that was the biggest "?" to me for my beginner coral tank. I went with a Full spectrum dimmable 165w LED. i do plan to take pictures and post once i decide on sand/rocks and figure out this whole Ro/Di thing
