How could I improve this sump?

I have a 45 gallon cube with 6 fish and soft corals Lps and one monti cap. I bought this tank used. Also there’s sponges and tube worms growing on the heater.

Change it up? Refuge?
Yes, that rusted clamp needs to go.

Did it come with a pump? Id put a downpipe into that filter sock a little bit just submerged. Or it will splash?!
What are those red knobs?
I agree change that metal hose clamp for a plastic one or a good strong zip tie for now.

Clean the sock.

Are you diligent enough to squeeze that sponge out every now and then? If not, a DIY eggcrate "media rack" could be 1.
You could use said rack for a bag or pantyhose filled with carbon or whatever else.

Just a single float switch? Can't tell if there is also an optical. I'm assuming it's an auto top off. What ATO do you have?

I think that's the heater.

Replace the old heater.

Remove light, add protein skimmer. If that is a regular gallon jug sitting there, should be enough room for a hang on refugium and use the light there.

Just what I would do..

Looks like enough room to add a skimmer. Maybe some rock rubble or marinepure for extra bio media

I think that jug is his or hers auto top off.
Turning it on its side and cutting the side top off and drilling holes would make it a flow through refugium though. I like it. Lol.

Figure out where all the splashing is coming from. Tidy things up a bit and clean and wipe down the entire sump from all the salt. Then show us an after picture.

It did not come with a pump, I used a cheap aqua top one at first but it died so I replaced it with a Simplicity 1000. The red knob is to a cheap heater.

The sump overflowed a year ago and I’m in a power chair so it’s a little difficult

The sock is the to muffle the noise. Which sponge? I have the big Tunze ATO so I have the sensor. How often do you replace heaters and is it normal for sponge and tube worms to grow? So a hang on refugium? Also where do I put a skimmer? Sorry about the punctuation I’m in a chair and it’s hard for me to type
