What are these bladder things on my tunze pump? How Do I get rid of them??? They are spreading.

i'm curious as to what they are b/c i have them too. I think they are kind of cool looking. One or more of my tank inhabitants eats it up all the time though. My guess is either tang, crabs or lawnmower blenny -- most likely the tang.

I do have a tamini tang and a number of blue-leg hermit crabs. For right now i pull out what I can and scrape them off. Fortunately I have most of my corals on frag rocks. They are spreading.

Don't want to spoil the party but maybe by cleaning your Tunze :D
It might have a longer lifespan too by doing so.
Me for a fact will clean every wave pump in my tank every month.
As I have 3 of MP40QD I just swap out the wet sides as I have 3 of those too.
Just takes me 3min to do so.

Most agree with cleaning the tunze. This is an older pic. I have since cleaned the pump. This was the only pic I had on hand with these little bladders. I do have a tamini tang and blue legs now. Urchins are a no go for this reef. I don't know if a purple tang will get along with a tamini tang and 2 black saddle back clowns. Please any other Idea's please guys?

I found out the scientific name for this red bubble algae. " botryocladia skottsbergii "

You do NOT want these. Siphon them off, do not pop them in tank by pulling, remove rock and scrape them off OUTSIDE of your tank and rinse rock in clean ASW before returning to tank. Repeat until gone.

Yea check it out. The articles say that ULNS are a higher target for them.
I'd pull each piece if can an try the peroxide method ph balanced RODI plus scrub. It'll blow up the cells and burn them. It works well on green bubble.
Won't mess with the cycle of the rock. Weaken it slightly in my observation but hardly noticeable to most.

A little favor if I may ask. would you happen to have a link to the peroxide method as it applies. I would really appreciate the effort. I know of a devise that uses 3-6% peroxide in it to eliminate nusense algae. I have some areas would require extreme measures to remove these guys. Idea: maybe fill a syringe with peroxide and target bladder where it is located in the tank and when possible out of the tank.

Yea check the pest algae challenge. search or even contact Twillard.. Oh wait. He would love this @twilliard
I would not poke those things. the link I put in mentioined it worse than bubble alge spores. Like a syrup.
I use a 5% for algae killing for five minutes. (my short hand)
In this case depending on what is going on in your system you may even consider peroxide dosing. But Todd is the man on that.

Honestly that has to be some of the weirdest things I have seen!
Not sure how I would control them.
We are talking about the bubbles with polkadots right?

Yes sir a common name is red Valonia or red bubble algae. Weird stuff. I only did a bit of quick research in it. Apperarantly nasty.
Honestly I was hoping it was a cool sponge when I saw it not Darth Algae.
The interior is described as a syrup.
