I'm curious about the chemiclean rec ... that's an anti-bacterial tool ... are we worried about that, if bacteria are the primary biological filter for our reefs?

Not sure what is in it but it says completely safe for nitrifying bacteria. Reeflux is another one which contains fluconazole which an antifungal. I haven't tried any of these yet.

Fluco anti-fungal has completely wiped out member tanks with SPS. Doesn't always happen, but for those who have gone through a wipe-out, it's gutting. What are the other options you're considering that aren't anti-bacterial/anti-fungal?

I will start with CUC, still trying to make an ideal selection from reefcleaners. I will also just give it time because my tank is about 10months old and I never really went through the ugly phase. I had m lights off for over 4 months so maybe this is the inevitable ugly phase that I was trying to outsmart. Will also do weekly hand pulling them out...good old elbow greese ( not fun in an 8 foot, 30inch tall tank) but hey its my hobby.

Personally I didn't know turbos didn't do well in an average temp Reef tank. I will remember this the next time. I usually try and do my research before adding any livestock. I recently haven't seen my turbo. Sometimes I don't see things for months on end and then all of a sudden they show up again. I will try to keep in mind about doing a bit more research before adding things. It's not that I totally don't care. I've had my clownfish for 7 years now and have tried to provide the best home possible for them.

Me neither...never knew turbos prefer cooler water temp. First time hearing it. Wonder why you they are on the market then.

Well I did some research from both forums and geography. It does seem they aren't best suited for tanks due to the high temp. But then again , their natural habitat does get up to these temperatures. Then again they can always go lower in the water to avoid it. In a tank I guess they don't have that ability. Some people even have successfully kept them at 78 f or so. But it's few and far between. If I got red turf algae again I think I'll just start over. Once it takes ahold there isnt much you can do. You can literally hold a 2 pound rock up by it with tweezers and it won't break. It's the worst ever lol.

Cyano wont grow in high flow areas. Up the pump game. And vaccum the sand. I object to adding chems to treat

Wow, that bad with red turf algae? The problem with starting over is what is the guarantee it won't show up in the start over system? I think the challenge of battling these issues makes the hobby fun.

I have 4 MP40s but haven't installed them yet because I don't have a significant amount of corals. Currently using 2 gyres and 2 tunzes.

I'd highly recommend the expanded CUC route...my reef is 20 years old and recently had a Cyano outbreak, for first time. Did the Chemiclean....it worked, but now I'm paying for it with my skimmer still going berzerko over a month later and many water changes....

Yeah it's in my opinion the worst stuff.

A good way is to just use new rock. I buy Reef saver rock or equivalent I've never seen it attached to corals. That also means new sand too. Honestly I'd pay a hundred bucks in new stuff to get rid of it lol.

I myself don't care for the challenges of reefing that are avoidable or problematic. It's enough to maintain optimal parameters, water changes and so on. I like to enjoy my tank and not have to look at it with disgust lol. If you ever get red turf algae you'll know what I mean. It basically looks like someone astro turfed your aquarium when you were gone with red carpet lol.

I haven't ordered yet but I am thinking of not getting any crabs at all. Heard bad things about crabs in general.

I dont mind my little hermits...they can get a little too picky at times but no major damage. The Emeralds I've tried a few and they got a serious taste for the expensive stuff...get outta my reef!!!! Lol...
