Just recently I have been having issues with SPS,(appers to be RTN) and only thing i can think of is it might be coming from my filter socks. alltests are right were they normally are

the way ive been cleaning them is like i always did before..turn them inside out and wash in cold water 2 TIMES..with a extra rinse cycle on the last wash

I recently moved and using a diffrent wash machine than usual and my concern is something has gotten on to them in the wash or pulling them out of the wash. so im looking for a differnt cleaning method.
Any tips or advice could be useful

Thanks In advance
E

I use the mesh type socks, and simply rinse them inside and out under the faucet in the laundry tub, while rubbing them between my hands. I then place them in a small bucket with some bleach for a few days, take them out, rinse them again, and hang them out to dry. I have two sets and change them about once a week.

I do pretty much the same thing with the ecception of a real good rince with RO/DI water before I place them back in the fuge. Hope this helps. You may want to check them for Red bugs. Use a magnifne glass and see if you have them. If so you will want to treat that ASAP (I use Coral RX) Are the corals new? I dip everything before putting it in the tank... Learned that the hard way......

You clean yours with BLEACH?????? Holy crap are you not scared? I guess if it works for you.........(Not what i would do)

Rinse out in Faucet with Spray Nozzle, Then I usually ad a Few Drops of dechlorinator to the tank and put it back.

My socks are the felt kind..200 micron I think

Have already checked for red bugs and flat worms and nothing

Why the heck is everyone scared of bleach? Let whatever you soak in it air dry and it's fine.

In other news, I don't use filter socks, so I don't have anything to need to clean out. :)

Really? Air dry is okay? I've always been overly cautious too.

One problem I have heard about using bleach, and why I did not bleach my socks, is it just bleaches the dirt particles so you can't see them, but they are still there. I am not 100% positive this is true, but I read it and I thought it made sense. It was in one of the other 200 threads about filter sock cleaning =P

I don't think that's true. Back in the day when the HOT Magnum was a premium filter, I the only way to get their micron filters to unclog was to soak them in bleach. The only confusing part to me was i was told to place them in boiling water afterward to remove the bleach.

That was like 15 years ago though so maybe that information was misunderstood.

Mom speaking here :) The best way to rinse bleach out is using COLD water. Then as stated let sit to air dry over night. Perfectly safe! Oh and you can throw the filter socks in the dish washer! Just rinse em out good first.

Toss them in the washing machine on quick cycle with a half-cup of vinegar in the "bleach" side of the dispenser. Let them air dry for a few days and back in they go.

I buy new ones and never reuse them. Cost me about $25 a month. I don't trust bleach with $THOUSANDS$ of coral in my tank. Just my personal preference and it gives me peace of mind.

As for what scares people about bleach, well nothing other than if the washer acts up or some bleach remains...it then is placed in the heart of your filtration and wipes out your entire tank. Other than that, I am cool with it...
