I saw basically this same question posted by Mr. Saltwater Tank and was wondering about all of you.

Mine is kind of a mix between don't ask, don't tell and doesn't care. I get away with hiding corals in the frag tank seeing as she just thinks they're all "sticks," but the fish don't go unnoticed. Usually it isn't a problem as long as I don't tell her what I spent...

I have an ammo box in the basement I throw money in. I use that for fish purchases, she knows that's what the box is for.

I allow myself X dollars a week and anything I don't spend goes in the box for "fun money". I've done this my whole life. So if I know I want something I just think do I really need that morning coffee?

My wife thought my fish tank was going to be cheaper than a Corvette. Oh was she so wrong, but she still thinks she right so it works out..

I think I spend more money on my tank then she spends shopping for everything else. But I do side jobs to pay for my tank.

I can't hide anything from Mike - or at least not for very long, LOL. He notices every frag or coral no matter how hard I try to camouflage. It did take him 3 days to notice the Rhomboid fairy's in our QT, but that was because he was swamped at work and I turned the QT lights off before he got home, LOL

His response is usually: "I thought WE agreed you weren't going to buy any more _______ ?!?" :amazed: (insert fish or corals...)

The funniest response I got was when he came home to find an empty SRO skimmer box in our entrance way. He found me in the garage putting together our SRO 6000sss. He actually shook his head and laughed. He also changed clothes and helped me finish putting it together. I keep telling him at least I'm not addicted to shoes...

In my situation it depends on the mood. Most of the time fish cost "$50" haha, but other times I can blow $200 on supplies and she won't say anything. For instance, I told her I was spending several hundred dollars on new live rock this weekend, and she didn't bat an eye to it. She was actually thinking about driving to Premium with me, haha

Luckily for me my wife got me into the hobby so its not to bad as long as the bills are paid and food for the kids. But I do get approval on big items like the brand new 4ft 120gal we bought last weekend!

she knows i blow all my extra cash on it but then again i never tell her how much i spent but she has a good idea

Every now and then my wife gets into my tank and wants a fish but she always tries to put domino damsels in my take or dottybacks. Most of the time I have to use change from groceries but I sneak a few extra dollars in for a frag or two. Lol

My wife is very accommodating, heck she even encouraged the purchase of my Radions. I am just upfront with her about what I bought and how much it cost. I always think honesty is the best answer. My wife usually tries to get involved and tries to pick out a few things when we venture to a LFS which I think is great. I'd love to come home and find her working on the tank.

Not to be a sour-puss but I think you all that don't tell your spouses about your purchases are really in the wrong. :( Being in a relationship is supposed to be a team and everyone should be working together. Start talking about everything with your spouses whether they like it our not and I think things will open up and your spouses will become more open to your purchases. (Sorry to be a downer!- just got to say what I feel because I would be very hurt if my husband was hiding purchases from me).

My hubby pays for everything. He knows a bored wife is an unhappy wife. :doubt: After the bills are paid, he doesn't care. I am very lucky!!!

I think she spends more on her quilting 'habit' than I spend on the reef ... we don't hide anything but we probably don't know the actual cost of lots of stuff we buy.
