How long for zoas to adjust to light

Hey all!

so a few days ago i got a zoa colony from the lfs and after one night they opened up nicely, then as my light peaked, the large heads excreted some brown stringy stuff from their mouths and shrunk up quite a bit, prob because of the kore intense lighting than the lfs. Now they're only very partially open.

how long does it usually take them to adjust to the light? i've turned them down a lil to make it easier for them.

What lights are you running? If they have an acclimation mode I would use that. It is my understanding that slow and steady is the best method... but I am sure someone with more experience will chime in. Congrats on the new Zoas (and pics are always great!)

i'm using the spectra aquaknight v2 which has a ramping function

With new corals I bring my intensity down to 60% and ramp up over 2-3 weeks. Are there other corals in the tank? How close to the light are these?

did you dip them? is there any way to move them down to the substrate? also, if they’re under direct light maybe try to move them to the side where it’s diffused a but more and away from high flow

yes i dipped them in a very dilluted bayer solution cause i heard bayer can be too harsh for zoas. i can move them to the substrate. i'll try that now

they are the only corals atm . the lights are around 14 inches from them

did you make sure all of their polyps were closed prior to dipping as well?

Does the polyps need to be closed to dip ? I hadn’t heard that before. Not saying your wrong at all, I’m just curious now lol

Zoas are odd ducklings. They are good sometimes, angry the next - look one way with certain lights and different with others. I’m currently on a big zoa kick - they are 80% awesome and 20% frustrating . I still don’t know why they are under the “super hardy” area of coral
Hope your polyps open up sooner than later - I believe they can take a week or longer sometimes to adapt to the new tank

I’ve bought about 25 frags of zoas in the last 2 weeks (probably overkill) but I’ll post a pic tomorrow if I remember . But some of mine are closed up like your talking about still. My last order was 2 days ago.

Zoa’s are pretty hardy little corals. +1 to everyone who said move them down to your substrate and over to the side. That brown stuff you saw was essentially poop (yes they poop) give them a week or so in your substrate. They are also adjusting to your tank, Your water and your lights.

depending on how close you want them to your lights do it slowly. Move them up give them a week and move them up again.

Well it the waste from that. I believe the zooxanthellae is the symbiotic stuff that lives in them. I feed my Zoa dominated tank reef roids and my zoas (even when I broadcast feed) show a feeding response.
