How many "Fish per Gallon" do you have?

I haven’t started stocking yet (90 gallon) but I’m thinking…
1 Yellow Tang
1 Sailfin Tang
1 Hippo Tang
4 Green Chromis
4 Anthias
1 Goby
2 Clowns
And possibly 1 Powder Blue Tang
…any thoughts?

Sailfin, hippo, and powder blue get much to big for a 90. Yellow will be okay. And in my experience the chromis will fight and eventually kill each other. I've tried multipul times. If you take out 3 chromis, pb tang, hippo, and sailfin you have a better stock, besides 4 tangs in a 90 will make them aggressive towards each other

I would do a Tomini Tang and Two-Barred Rabbit or another foxface, they're a good algae-rock-scrubbing team. The Tomini will stay a good size for that 90g. I think a yellow we get along with then as well.

Currently I have .15 fish per gallon. 6 fish in a 40g tank (not including the 20g sump). All fish are relatively small.

Guesstimating size:

Yellow Watchman- 2.5"
Clowns- Female 2.5" Male - 2"
McCoskers- 2.5"
Helfrichi- 2.5"
Madarin- 3"

Give or take .5" I would say. The tank seems fairly active due to the clowns, firefish, and wrasse staying out in the open. I am still thinking of getting 1 or 2 more smaller fish. Just haven't decided on what kind. Possibly another wrasse, blenny, and/or a Royal Gramma.

Typically just the display volume and skimmer size when considering fish load.

Cumulative length of the 3 fish in the tank is 7 inches.


When stocking my tank(s) I really only consider how much room they have to swim and whether I provided enough hiding spaces.

I have 12 in a 90, most are two inches and under. Well over a 100 pounds of liverock w lots of hiding room. Checking Craigslist daily for a 155-280gal at a decent price cause I know ill be upgrading sooner than later. Main fish are clowntrigger, Huma trig, Niger trig all two inchers. HippoTang 2.5in. Couple sm clowns. 1in Benny. Yellow wrasse 2.5. Diamond Goby w purple spots who never comes out. Never see any fighting which is a plus

When a single fish can be an inch or twenty inches, fish per gallon is not consistent enough to be a very useful stat depending on what you want to use it for.

"How many inches of adult fish per gallon?" would be a little better question, and gives a much different picture for most every tank presented. (If the idea is to use this info to avoid over-stocking your tank, use this measure and not simple inch/gal.)

I've got three adult Barnacle Blennies in a 40 gallon, FWIW. 3" total of adult fish in 40 gallons.

Just for reference, my old freshwater Oscar tank was two fish in a 75 gallon, or about 26" of adult fish.
