Hello! I currently have a 60g cube 24x24x24. I have a smaller sized Scopas tang but he is growing like a weed! I plan to upgrade to a 100 gallon 60x28x14. Essentially a 2 foot to a 5 foot upgrade.

I do want at least another tang, preferably a yellow tang, but I want to be a responsible tang owner. How should I go about this.

Thank you!

A scopas and yellow tang is bound to end in disaster in that size of a tank, if you want a second tang get one one of the bristle tooth/ kole tangs

I think it’s possible. But certainly with risk.

I would try to get 2 yellow tangs smaller or larger than the scopas. Then, introduce them all at once into the 100 gallon tank. (I would pre quarantine the new guys). Tape a couple mirrors to the outside of the new tank. Feed them well and often.

Thank you! I’ve heard of many people doing this with success. I am thinking of buying two captive bred BIOTA yellow tangs if this is the case. I have my Scopas and he gets bullied by my queen clownfish lol

I don’t have a scopas but have been dealing with tangs for a while now. BTW the purple is my favorite. I bought him in 1994.

My Yellow and Scopas fight like hell, in a smaller tank like that one of them would likely die due to stress/bullying. Your best bet would a bristletooth tang like Tomini or Two spot.

Thank you. I want ole yellow ! :(

introduce powder blue to purple, purple was not happy for a few days powder blue did not leave the left side of the tank now they don't bother each other but 2 of the same genius may not be good if i was to add another Acanthurus tang with the powder blue idk how long it would live

In my 6 foot tank I have 3 Yellows, a Purple, a Gem, a Kole and a White Tail Bristletooth. All medium size and all of them get along.

Started with the Purple. Added a yellow, the purple picked on it for a bit. Then they were best buds. Then added the White Tail, they totally ignored it. Added the next Yellow and Kole Tang together. The new yellow got and still gets chased a bit but pops right back out of the rocks after the chase to join the pack. The last one added also a yellow was totally ignored by everyone.

The Kole and White tail get along just fine too. , I think the White Tail was annoyed for a while because the Kole followed it around like they were supposed to be a “school” and the White tail was kind of a loner.

If you feed a lot, have good water quality and lots of places to hide, then tangs all get along fine, IME. They can get testy with caves and arches that humans like since they don't seem to feel secure... or they are underfed. They need to be fed enough to be growing and nice and fat.

Chocolate tang don't get large. Most of the bristletooths stay small.

I have always found the "never 2x of the same type" thing to be true.

I must have gotten a nasty Kole then. Had to remove him less than a week after introduction as he bullied a Leopard wrasse to death and nearly got the Chocolate juvenile.
