I recently read an article about the most expensive fish ever sold. I don't mind splurging a little, but I am in a different category than these people. Here is the list of extravagant fish.

I want to know. How much are you willing to spend on a new fish, or what is the most you have spent?

(Personally, that Clarion angel is the most beautiful in the lineup and

1. Platinum Arowana. $400,000
2. Polka dot stingray $100,000
3. Peppermint angelfish. $30,000
4. Bladefin basslet $10,000
5. Golden basslet. $8,000
6. Neptune grouper. $6,000
7. Australian flathead perch. $5,000
8. Wrought iron butterfly $2,700
9. Clarion angel $2,500
10. Candy basslet. $1,000

My arbitrary maximum was about 320 last year, it's about ~350 now.

I did buy one exception fish, a Gem tang, but it was less than double my arbitrary max and it was a reward for a record month for me. Honestly, buying super expensive fish seems silly to me in many cases, how dumb would I feel if I dusted a $30,000 fish? Real bad! LOL

If I kill the Gem Tang I will feel immensely stupid. I don't have the disposable income to do that stuff all the time at the moment!

That's my thought process. I think the white tail tang is beautiful but at the moment $250 is pricey, especially just starting out and I will probably kill quite a few things. (Hope not) Maybe in a few years when I upgrade.....

Lol, $120 per a single fish.
Pintail wrasse.
$100, $90, $80. All the rest are $60 or way less. $19? Cheapest fish.

Does $70 on an invert count?

Not a big spender.

There’s not a thing wrong with that! I was that way until about year 8 or 9 in the hobby and sometimes I wish I still was!

I would say my most is about $60, but I did spend $125 on a purple tang. Unfortunately that purple tang was my only casualty in Hurricane Florence. I guess better one fish than all the fish, but it still sucks it had to be the most expensive one. I learned my lesson though; just stick to cheaper fish.

It will always be the most expensive. Law of the universe. I am sorry you lost it

So far I'm $15 and $30 lol
What invert??
Saw them for $30 years ago.

Lol, won't say how many years.

Years back I had a Japanese Dragon Moray that was around $1,000. A few months in I bought some squid from Whole Foods and left it in the fridge a bit too long before freezing. Noticed the squid smelled a bit off but fed it anyway. Dead eel a couple days later; an expensive lesson learned.

Priciest fish currently is a Poma Labs Blueline. IMO, it was worth the price to have a robust juvenile Blueline.

DD just sold a clarion angel for $7,500

how much would I spend good question. Most I spent is 125$ for a Swiss guard basslet , very pretty little fish .

I HAD ONE OF THOSE!! And paid the same for as you for it, was an awesome fish. I went to rescape the tank one day and crushed him between two rocks when I was moving them :(
I would snap another one up in heartbeat, but havent seen any in stores in a long time. I would probably break the budget for one, and the wife would actually be ok with it, because that was her favorite fish.

I clicked on the $50-$100 range, only because I'm not willing to go to the full $300 on the next group. I'd say $125-$150 is my max.

$60 per fish is my cap. I could afford some of the fish in the few hundred dollar range, but for me it's simply a cost-benefit analysis. I simply can't find a way to get more than $60 worth of enjoyment out of a given fish in my current financial situation. If money were no object then I would probably venture in the $200-$300 range for something really special, but truth be told the $55 I spent on a Flame Angel is the most I have spent on any fish. My current most expensive fish is my One Spot Foxface, which ran a whopping $45.

Agreed, there are so many variables with marine fish survival in captivity (ie hidden disease, parasites, tank heater failure, flooding, tank leaking/failure, excessive power outage, or simply some random fluke in water perameters). Too much that can go wrong and you are suddenly out hundreds or thousands of dollars.
