Most i ever spent on a fish was a koi, was $400 this is no where near how expensive they get but was expensive for me. Became a meal for heron so guess i spent hundreds on bird food. I now stock goldfish .

Next closest was stocking my freshwater with wild fish from a collector shipped from the to my lfs. In total was around $300 for 30+ fish.

Years back I had a Japanese Dragon Moray that was around $1,000. A few months in I bought some squid from Whole Foods and left it in the fridge a bit too long before freezing. Noticed the squid smelled a bit off but fed it anyway. Dead eel a couple days later; an expensive lesson learned.

Priciest fish currently is a Poma Labs Blueline. IMO, it was worth the price to have a robust juvenile Blueline.

Not to hijack, but as foul as the things fish eat in the wild can be, I can’t imagine it killing your eel. I of course, could be completely off-base, but I don’t think fish have the sensitive stomachs that we do. Hmm

I won a Gem tang so didn't have to buy it :) But other than that I bought an Earlie's fairy wrasse a few years ago that went carpet surfing after a few months of having it....In my current collection, besides the Gem, my most expensive is The splendid pintail fairy wrasse.

my most expensive one in the tank is my color morph angel. Spend 10.000€ (11.578$) and he is
worth every penny. But wouldn't spend much more on a fish.

I recently read an article about the most expensive fish ever sold. I don't mind splurging a little, but I am in a different category than these people. Here is the list of extravagant fish.

I want to know. How much are you willing to spend on a new fish, or what is the most you have spent?

(Personally, that Clarion angel is the most beautiful in the lineup and

1. Platinum Arowana. $400,000
2. Polka dot stingray $100,000
3. Peppermint angelfish. $30,000
4. Bladefin basslet $10,000
5. Golden basslet. $8,000
6. Neptune grouper. $6,000
7. Australian flathead perch. $5,000
8. Wrought iron butterfly $2,700
9. Clarion angel $2,500
10. Candy basslet. $1,000

SOMEONE... did their research and yes there are very pricey rare specimens out there. Conditions have to be steady ideal before I would consider any $800 + fish
Top 3 on the list would afford a real nice home with a real nice large tank IMO !!-

Maybe I am wrong, but it generally seems to me people will easily pay a lot more for a coral that sits there than a personable fish that swims around. Funny because it seems corals are riskier and more picky over parameters than most fish.

I’ve had two bandit angelfish die in quarantine. First one to a gram negative bacterial infection about 3 weeks into quarantine. Second to a negative buoyancy swim bladder infection that appeared about two weeks into quarantine after trying to save for a month after that. So... I got another. Starting to approach the $2k mark on a single fish after shipping and a vet bill... is that nuts??

I HAD ONE OF THOSE!! And paid the same for as you for it, was an awesome fish. I went to rescape the tank one day and crushed him between two rocks when I was moving them :(
I would snap another one up in heartbeat, but havent seen any in stores in a long time. I would probably break the budget for one, and the wife would actually be ok with it, because that was her favorite fish.

I clicked on the $50-$100 range, only because I'm not willing to go to the full $300 on the next group. I'd say $125-$150 is my max.

To love the hobby isn't nuts. If money wasn't an object, like if I won the lottery ;Greedy I would spend waaaay more. Not quite $400,000 but that Clarion angel should be mine!
