Lately it has been like every 4 months , like today my alk has been giving me trouble over the last week and now taking its toll on my sps. 3 months ago it was the po4 and 3 months prior the salt issues (Red Sea Pro) with dkh to high. if its not one thing its another ..bought dosers for the alk problems today since dosing by hand anything over 40ml causes issues if done all at once . Bought the Zeovit reactor for po4, and went back to RC sea salt ..whats next over the last 5 months my Red Dragon took a bad hit and now my tabling red acro if i loose that i may just throw the towel in ..we shall see..

So how often do you contemplate the hobby? and why?

Lol, Every time I have do anything besides enjoy the tank. I thought I had everything I need then oh wait you need this and this oh and this will help that. I tell myself weekly if another coral dies I'm going FOWLR but I'm too addicted to it to quit.

i would say if you get out u will be back, so just get a bigger tank

I'm 95% sure I'm selling off the reef. Death has swept through it, and I'm over it.

1. Try to be proactive, not reactive
2. Do frequent water changes
3. MOST IMPORTANT: let nature work her beauty

These animals are tougher than we credit. Assuming you have clean water, nice flow, and plenty of light, they will find a way to live. Living your reeding life by test readings will drive you crazy.

Well, everytime I see something that needs to be done, but just too tired to do it. At this point though, I don't know what I would do if I didn't have it. Hang in there, it will get better!!!

I lost a couple K in coral this year and the thought crossed my mind once...buts thats it..only ONCE!! hahahaaa I could never stop doing this!!

That sucks!! Is it something that you have an idea how to correct or is the issue something that has been lingering about undiagnosed for awhile now?

Lately it's been more often.. I feel like I put so much $$, time, and effort and still cannot get my reef at 100%.
And I rarely spend much time staring at my reef anymore either..

Undiagnosed for a while now. That's the thing... I have no issue fixing a known problem. But when everything double check, checks out OK, then I just throw my hands in the air. All acros are gone. Some chalices too. All euphyllia are gone...

Very sorry to hear Peter. You had an awesome collection bro!

That's nature saying "get more zoa's!" :)

Sorry to hear that dude. While I've never experienced what you are going through, I can imagine how frustrating and demoralizing it could be.

When something affects a wide range of species like that I'd be inclined to believe it could be something bacterial that is taking hold. What kind of symptoms are your seeing in the struggling coral? I'm sure your vital parameters are on and relatively stable. If you run a sand bed have you entertained replacing it and starting fresh or going bare bottom for awhile to try and get things as "sterile" as possible? Have you changed anything lately in your routine or equipment wise? Have your ran a polyfilter yet?

I'm dealing with the same thing can't figure it out for nothing all tests are spot on it's killing me and all my corals are already dead sucks

Double checked alk, against a standard I made at my lab. All chemistry parameters check out fine, including salinity. The tank has been BB since inception. I ran a polyfilter thinking maybe some leeching chemical. No weird colors...

^^ Ditto

This same thing happened to a friends tank this year (a 280g mixed DT...one of the best in the Monterey area) and it went undiagnosed.

I believed it was something bacterial as every species was universally affected over the period of a month. He lost just about everything except a couple zoa colonies..with months of me pestering him he started over with a 90g last week!!

That's unfortunate. Any pics of your friends old tank? I am from the monterey bay area and am not familiar with this setup.

Well, a 240g FO and 20g solana clown cube will keep me in the hobby, even without the reef.

In your struggling coral do you notice a uniform band of recession with a light film that looks almost like a ring of mucus/slime? I've had this before in my struggling LPS and have seen it migrate into struggling acropora bases as well. This film can be removed but is persistent to return and inevitably chokes out the coral until it's demise.

Really sorry to hear this Peter. Ironically I am going through a similar issue right now. Its affecting only chalices, I have lost 5 or 6 colonies. All parameters are spot on and 90% of my corals look incredible, but one by one some chalices are getting wiped out quickly. Starts with spiky base and gaping mouth and they are gone fast. I am almost positive its bacterial and is linked back to the major breakdown in tanks from few months back. It has me terrified to say the least.
