I'm getting ready to build a DIY stand for my new 40g breeder (36x18x17). I'm curious about the best height. Standard store stands are usually 30" high but the tank is shallow so I thought about going taller. Can I get a poll about your stand height? I'm 5'5" fwiw.

42", I thought it was too tall in the beginning, I think it is just right now. You don't have to squat down to see the tank

I went 38 inches....also gives me a little more headroom in the stand.

Most of the stands I've made have been 36" and I've never regretted the height. The stand I'm currently working on for 45 cube that is 18" is 40" tall so that I can view the tank without having to hunch over. It's not setup yet but I think I'm going to like it.

I believe mine is 42. I used the stock stand, but I built a 12 inch base that the stock stand sits on top of then trimmed it out to match. My tank dimensions are 48x37x27. I'm 5 foot 8. I need either a small step ladder or a chair to work on the tank but I love the added height and it is worth it to me. It beats having to hunch over or kneel down to view. Also keeps my kids grubby finger prints of the glass.

It depends on how you intend to view the tank. Since I enjoy sitting in front of a tank from time to time I sit in the chair I would normally use to view the tank. Measure from the floor to my eye level. Subtract half the height of the tank and use that measurement for the top of the stand height.

I'm still working on my build but mine will be 42" for a 125 gallon and 150 tall. They are going to be a pain in the button to clean and do any work on but they are going to look awesome high up. I hate to have to stand there bent over to see my fish. I'm 6'1". I'm planning to wear my scuba mask and snorkel to do any kind of work in the tank

I'm building a 40 breeder too! My stand is 36 inches tall. Are you drilling the tank?

I built my frame at 38", but my floor is rough stone and out of level so I put it on a concrete pad raising another 2", so 40" total.
I prefer at least 36" for gear room below.
No matter what, anything even over 30" w/ a 20-24" tall tank and you are probably going to need at least a step ladder.
I just got a nice folding aluminum step that tucks away easy.

Mines 36" tall and tank is 25" tall it's perfect I don't have to bend over to view the tank when standing!!

I have a 40B and I built my stand 30" tall. Its sitting on a 3/4" piece of plywood so I could shim it since its on carpet so its sitting at 30.75". Im 6' and I think its the perfect height.
