How your significant other views the hobby...

She resents the amount of time I spend tinkering with the tank, or talking about it. Then I catch her watching the tank all the time. Last visit to the LFS for fish we ended up buying only fish she wanted. Hmmm

LOL strike the last sentence and that sums up my current wife. I often buy online and I don't take her to the LFS and she does not want to go. However she always has comments like no more that color or get something unusual. I will say though when I jumped back into the hobby I was debt free (no mortgage, no cc, no car payment etc.) and I am still that way and I don't use CC. I would just opine CC and this hobby are a recipe for disaster. But even using my own cash the wife some how figured out I spent $1500 on corals just prior too, during rap and shortly thereafter. The mouth still has not stopped on that one.

I find myself doing that all the time... "I have NO idea where it came from.", "I'm pretty sure that was there the whole time, but it needed more light so I moved it from the back of the tank to the front" and the best one, "Do you remember when I told you that we lost some coral because they fell into that rock? Well they came out of the rock and they are right in the front now! Wow!"

My wife has grown into it allot. Granted I had to set her up her own tank for blue cloves, pulsing xenia and everything else I didn't want invading my tank.

I still remember the day my wife got mad at the hobby. I had a 90 gallon bowfront with coral and reef safe fish. We went into the lfs and I was looking at coral and she was looking at fish. I noticed her at one place for a while and that she was dragging her finger around outside the glass. She finally came over to me and said, I found our next fish. He has good personality and will follow my finger. It's so ugly that he's cute, and I want it. I asked what it was and it was the dogfaced puffer. I told her that he wasn't reef safe and my tank was to small. She didn't like that to much and said " I'm not worried about your stupid coral". I promised her a 300 gallon predator tank one day but she hasn't been the same since.

I joke about my wife being super-critical of my spending for my tanks, but the truth of the matter is she is fairly supportive. We are in a paying down debt effort right now, so I haven;t bought much lately, but she actually enjoys going to our club frag auctions, and asks me to bid on certain ones. She even got frustrated when I stopped bidding on one because I felt it was getting too high.

She really likes zoas, so I am working on creating a multi-colored zoa garden in my tank. She will clean the glass with the float scraper, but that is all since the great "helpful water change" last year, when she decided to help me and did a 10 gallon water change on my 30 gallon tank while I was at work, only she used RODI not salt, and killed off that tank...

Wife barely tolerates it. It has caused problems more than once in the house so I downgraded. It got better when I got a AIO tank. It was really bad when I had a sump and a larger tank. So I had to balance. The only rule is always there will be at least 1 tank in the house I am not willing to compromise that. she still doesn't know since AIO is less of a problem I am looking for a larger one

I told her 32 years ago I can go to the bar and relax or stay home and relax with my fish. She complains but not as much today, but she is still here so I guess she loves me in spite of my vices
