Hello Reefers!

This will be my build thread on my Red Sea Reefer 350. I actually bought the tank a couple months ago but got it wet just 3 weeks ago. It took a little while to gather the items to get it up and running so here we are!

I'm not entirely new to salt water tanks, I've had several but my last tank was taken down about 10 years ago (180g), and of course, several smaller tanks which led up to the 180g!

I reunited with a friend (G5flyer) and he has a couple amazing tanks and therefore the obsession was reignited once again. So off we go!

Hardware list as follows,
RSR 350 v3.
Ecotech Radion XR15 Gen4 Pro with Ecotech mounting arms.
Reef Octo VarioS 6 return pump.
Kessil H160 Refugium light.
Apex 2016 controller.
Apex WAV powerhead X2.
Avast marine ATO system with their Diaphragm pump.
Finnix 300w titanium heater.
60lbs Carib Sea live sand.
Marco Rocks, approximately 45-50lbs.

Day I brought the tank home!

I decided to paint the walls and floor of the sump so that I could see inside if it a little better. Here's a good pic of the V3 sump.

I decided to go with the Reef Octo VarioS 6 return pump. I like that it was Apex ready and RO seems to have a good reputaion, it has done great so far, very quiet!

I went with the Red Sea adaptors for the hard plumbing. I only hard plumbed the return for now but I plan on doing all three.

I am going skimmerless (for now at least) and went with the Kessil H160 for the refugium light along with Kessil's arm mount.

Had to go with the Apex! I never had a controller before and I'm amazed at what we can do these days!

Dunkin was a rescue and the scares on his face tell a very sad story, still brings tears to my eyes. BUT, he won the lottery and is loved so much and so spoiled, he really is a great dog and forever grateful, so loving and just wants to be loved. He really rescued me in the process.

A little update on my refugium. I have lots of pods which I seeded from Algae Barn, run my Kessil H160 from 9pm to 9am at probably 65-75% intensity.
This is first couple days.

This is 4 weeks of growth.

There is a Marine Pure 1" block underneath.

I had a 2 - 3 day period with a little green algae on top of the rocks and a 1-2 day period of the brown stuff (diatoms) on a couple spots in the sand around week 2 and it's has all cleared up! My sand is very clean and I hardly have to swipe the glass. So far so good!

Just received my 350. So you ditched the stock return line and hard plumbed your own? That orange pvc is 1-1/4”?

Also, I see you have 2 hard cylinder thingys. I have 1 hard plastic and 1 sock. Whats the deal?


I will be assembling it next week. I will try to order pieces befor then.

The return line is 1" PVC that I bought from BRS, the plan is to hard plumb the return with a manifold for one or two reactors. I only hard plumbed the return as the ATO tank gets in the way of the manifold. I am working on a water mixing station, ATO tank in the basement and when that is completed, I'll re-plumb the return with a manifold.

The second plastic cup is a Red Sea media cup, mine only came with one cup and one sock like yours, I just bought a second cup and fill them both with filter floss instead of using a filter sock. Much easier to change out filter floss than to remove, clean and replace the socks.

Got it. The coupling from the Varios6 is 1-1/4” on mine. It is large that then has to go to the much small red sea return line. I need to figure out hiw to do this. I don’t even see Red Sea showing these adaptors in their website.

I just double checked, I used 3/4" for the return which is stock, I am going to use 1" on the drains!

I used a pipe reducer on the coupling that came with the Varios for the hard line, got it from BRS also.

Hey Hulley, so I just setup my H160 on a little refugium under my Red Sea 250 and I'm struggling to get chaeto to grow. I saw you run yours 12 hours at 65-75%, what spectrum do you have it set on, "Grow"? Thanks. Wish I could get growth like that.
