Hydrored's 300 Glass Cages Build

I do really well with maricultured. I've found they really like low nutrients with crazy high light. I acclimated them till I started to see color change and moved them up and up slowly over a month or two.

Interesting enough in the holding tanks they are lit by a 150 watt MH, my guess is pretty low par. It’s a gamble to me, especially for what I’m paying per colony considering it’s less than some basic frags sold online

I've had the best success at 500-800 par

Mariculture is 100% a gamble and sometimes it pays off HUGE! Other times, they're just calcium reactor media

Yeah….. this piece here came from mariculture that 95% died in three days and I fragged it. Now it’s growing like a weed

One of my two rainbow splice frags has started basing out and growing that’s getting hit with really high PAR. The other that is in 250 looks fine but has done nothing (hard to get a picture of)

Picked up 14 colonies today, mostly tenuis. They have been in holding for a month so I’ll see how long they last as they are maricultured. One has a SPS crab it that I have been looking for for awhile. Keeping them in my quarantine tank-

Did you source this mari stuff from LFS or a direct transhipper?

Transhipper, I still pay a bit over actual cost but it’s worth it as they have holding tanks where they take the insta melt risk instead of me. Most of my stuff is from chop shops. I don’t mind as I’m not really a name game guy.

One of my LFS gets transhipped in monthly or so. I am trying a few smoothies from him; so far so good.

He takes my mid range and basic Monti, LPS and mid size acro colonies in trade, which is very cool.

That’s a nice deal! For me it’s a cash only deal so all risk.

I can’t give away my monti’s around here.

In a "normal" world this wouldn't really work, but times are still abnormal. Air freight costs are hurting the coral shipping business. This will pass once Asia starts flying again. Until then, it is worth me bagging up and driving over. It is worth my time and the LFS does better than otherwise.

Also, I have known these LFS owners for years. I know what they prefer and I don't ask much at all. They both have large tank service businesses that need regular coral replacements. And it is all store credit. We both "win", they more than me, which is fine. They are not making a killing by any stretch and work long hours. I cover my salt and 2-part bill and don't have to throw coral in the trash. Maybe we both win.

absolutely! I sell frags for store credit to help pay for my LRS. Other than that I really don’t buy much from them unless I order it.

BTW Orphek has pushed a firmware update changing the fan profile. I’m even happier with them now.

I received my ICP test back and still showing a bit of copper, nothing too alarming and phosphates show .09. I have been still seeing high phosphates with my Hanna (.20-.22)

I purchased the standard solutions and shows the Hanna is testing right but I also bought a Red Sea test kit to use in my Mastertronic and that test at .11. I did the manual test with a color wheel and I would guess at the .10 range.

So either the Hanna is wrong or it’s picking up something in the water that makes it test higher, a quick google most comment how ICP labs are showing much lower results.

How is your silica level?

ICP results will show much lower results. It has been my consistent experience. I started a thread posing the question and someone linked a research article that was pretty well done on the subject.

As @rtparty is suggesting, dosing silicates can fool the Hanna to some degree. I have read that around here a few times.

Thanks, I don’t dose any silicates other that what’s in ESV. My silicates don’t ever show high and the phosphates test normal on new salt with Hanna.

I’m just going to go with my phosphates are fine and will use the Mastertronic along with monthly ICP test to keep track of it. I’m not overly concerned with getting the most out of growth anyways
