Today is the fun job of cleaning pumps, I took off the back 2 MP40’s and may just leave them off. Pain in the ***

I hate cleaning pumps! I can't wait to get another Tunze Stream 3 so I can just run 2 pumps total on my tank.

I’m already up to 120 ml a day of 2 ESV @ScottB and that’s with keeping most coralline off the walls

I need to watch my salinity closer now as ICP shows it has been creeping up, dosing almost a gallon of ESV a month so It makes sense

Do you think two Stream 3 pumps will be enough? How do you plan on mounting them? How is your single one mounted now?

any of you have an idea of of what kind of fish count I could add at once? I have an opportunity to do a buy out but it’s about 6 pretty large tangs along with about 15 smaller fish. Issue is I would have to add them all at once.

Even if the tank can handle it I would have to wonder if I’m going to deal with a blood bath.

It’s an opportunity to add the bio load the tank really needs, with 12 fish in my 300 I have to overfeed to get nitrates

= the bulk addition of fish we don’t want burned, we want an effective known start date for the bioload at hand. Fish in bulk I could see some benefit in bulk additions if the all come from the same disease preps place


Tanked the show knew how to add twenty tangs and not burn them, transferring over ready bio media fir filters and using common bottle bacteria, ATM is actually decent cycling bac, they were able to quick stock many tanks.

initial bioload carry will be fine I bet, but will go study real quick to ensure.

Was a tank transfer from a 1.5-year-old 200-gallon tank. 300 turned 6 months old on June 10th, sump is packed with Australian and KP aquatics live rock- some of it a few years old, aquabiomics live sand and rubble sized for 900 gallons.
 
Final verdict upon seeing top pic captioned - the specimen tank absolutely jutted in high surface area corals and live rocks it’s the most ideal placement for surface area a reef tank can hope for and is fully matured, not even freshly cycled but fully matured. You will not overpower that systems ammonia command with fish addition, your corals w likely grow even faster for the new feed input.


anyone with a calibrated seneye attached before and during the fish addition will see safe zones kept. It is not true that bacteria must build up on the rocks to accommodate more fish, it’s ready now. The current bacteria are simply going to step right up, same day. More bacteria do not grow to take on new bioload because matured rocks like that are already full, and can carry more than your current fish bioload.

The active rock + coral surface area ammonia uptake zones are positioned exactly in the middle of the display water for instant oxidation. Ideal tank here. Whatever the max degree of fish that behavioral variables and disease variables will allow, that picture of live rock shows a tank that will handle a strong bioload with specifically no ammonia crash as measured on a digital device.

in all threads of display living bioload tests I’ve ever seen, I’ve never seen live rock overpowered not one single time not ever. Chances here is the first time on file: .000001%

Thank you, well the disease part is the one that can bite me hard. I have all quarantined fish, the tank that these fish are coming from has been up for years with fat fish. No signs of sickness but we all know how that goes, I have seen ich pop up years ago that I never knew I had from a tank transfer. I guess this is a massive coin flip.

I can pick up a seneye if I decide to go through with this.

Don't you have a murderous tang? A purple if I recall?

Maybe 21 fish added at once that all know each other fends off any attacks but you better be ***** sure everything is disease free.

I think it would be cool and would set your tank up for long term success. I doubt you overpower filtration capabilities. Corals alone will suck up a ton of the ammonia IME. I still argue they prefer ammonia and we should be dosing ammonia, not nitrates. With that said, I would test ammonia daily for a week.

In short, are the fish super healthy and disease free? Which tang is the leader of the 6? What size tank are they coming out of? Are any of the other fish a question mark for aggression? Something like a dottyback? I find them to be a**holes.

I do have a purple tang that is an outright murderer. Fish are coming out of a 260 gallon tank, I have no way of knowing they are disease-free other than they have grown old in this system. Here is the list of fish-

I'd definitely find new homes for a few of those. Especially the new purple or your current purple, the clowns, the damsel, cleaner wrasses can turn into complete jerks, the sailfin and orange shoulder will be wild cards IMO.

Do tanks this size normally carry as many fish as planned? I bet so, I've seen some fish packed systems on youtube
 
Well, I normally do not and do not plan to add all of them, I’m also removing my vlamingi that is probably worth 6 fish for bio load. I’m not sure the sweet spot but 12 certainly isn’t enough in a 300 and no idea if 30 is too many
 
I wouldn’t spend 190$ for a seneye just get a common but brand new seachem ammonia alert badge and put it in to calibrate safe zone color before you add all the fish, that’ll be a nice backup.

That’s key, there’s nothing to ramp up. The bacteria are full on existing surfaces. If anything is in doubt based on prior fails seen, we would need to add more surface area not coax more bacteria (I have never seen a fail logged before for nitrification rates among stacks of live rock)

Bacteria are never limiting in any aspect of bioload carry, there are no known instances of live rock unable to keep up with a bioload in a display reef I’ve seen. Bacteria do not react to the increased bioload by increasing in numbers, there’s no space for them.


Stacking on top of current bacteria doesn’t increase surface area, only new surfaces to attach can provide the required attachment space and exposure to wastewater. Dr. Tim has discussed that the mechanism used is current bacteria instantly begin processing more waste should no extra surface area be given.

I wish I could take a picture to show the size of sponges in my drain compartment, I actually find them awesome to look at. Makes me wonder what they are up to lol. Also Pedro the pistol shrimp lives in that deep dark hole and is still alive and kicking after months. (He went in there on accident)

If this amount of rock plus what’s in my display can’t handle it then I’m screwed

Tank has to be shut down by Sept 1st, I’m waiting to see if they can get the tank and all of the coral sold first.
