I am angered and sad now!

On saturday there was a frag swap, Seems like the Rainbow nem I bought was not as healthy as they said it was..
It had a closed mouth at the time and looked beautiful.. As I was talking with the guy, he promised me it was in the best of health along with standing behind it.

I did the typical 1 hour drip and replace water method as I have done with all my nems in the past.
As I placed it in the tank I noticed it's mouth was open a little.. I figured it was from the acclimation and getting used to it's now home. a day or two went by and the mouth still remained open slightly.

As phone calls and text messages are going back and forth, I get the feeling like they will not replace it if death becomes it.. The words they used were "We have a new batch being ordered this week if you want to order a replacement".... Do I pay or will it be covered is the real question......

These pictures were taken today.. 1/4 of the day it is beautiful, and the rest it is all deflated and looking sickly ill..
The water quality was check again twice.. Once by myself and once by my LFS

Looks like it's loosing color. Maybe bleaching a bit. I would give it some shade and a little less flow.

it already as very little flow... just a little above
My whole tank is tested for low flow in may areas so it did not matter where I put the anemones.

The picture might be a little deceiving, believe it or not.. it has gained a little color in the last two days.

Got ya. Well I've seen nems act that way when they have too much flow and light. It's like they deflate once they have had enough. Was he on a rock, or did he put himself in that spot?

I sat him there when I got him, and he has not moved one inch since saturday...

Tonight I will cardboard over the light just above him to see if it makes a difference.

I have a pair of bta in mh tank. They will deflate and hide from time to time. One of mine is about 4 inches under the surface in 400 par and super happy.

I think it looks like it's still acclimating. It's been in the tank such a short time.

I have seen healthy anemones do this many times. They will look like that for days and then look perfect again. Just keep an eye on it and if it's not falling part or detaching I would leave it alone.

I did turn off the white lights and let the blue t5's on. It looks like it should minus the open mouth.

Maybe I will just run the blues tomorrow to see what happens. I have never had a finicky nem like this one. I have a feeling this is going to be my ******* child

I have a 29 gal with a 8 gal sump, they are under T5 HO (one white one blue), When bought from the swap it was under LED but do not know what they were housed under at their shop.
I was told they get direct from a diver, and then house for a week or so before they sell again. I could have directly shipped from the diver if needed.

I have several in my tank, one minute they look like that then they puff back out. Its pretty normal even though it looks bad. Don't sweat it

Thanks for letting me know that.. Besides this one I also have a watermelon, rose BTA, Cindy, and rock flower nems. None of the other ones do that and it started to freak me out a bit.
I did attach a cover over the light so it would have a bit more shade just incase that it is getting too much light. It never hurts to problem solve a little.

Ok I think I have figured something out, but I don't know how to fix the problem.

The nem is doing beautiful so far today, and I covers half the top of the tank with a hunk of cardboard. Now the problem comes in when I turn my white lights on. The nem will deflate and curl up and then gape its mouth, it is the strange thing I have seen so far since none of the rest of the nems are behaving this way.
I think I ended up with a nocturnal bubble tip. I am going to have to video this thing and its behavior for my LFS since they never heard or seen anything like it before

Seems to me that you have an anemone that has been shipped a great deal in a short amount of time. A lot of that time has been spent in the dark. You are going to need to acclimate
it to your lights.

I would suggest putting 3 layers of window screen b/t the tank and the lights (( can be supported by egg crate if needed )), and remove a layer every 5-7 days. Have done this numerous times with great success.

Did you feed and if so any discharge with the deflate? Mine do that after a feeding with what I am assuming puking out the waste when I see brown like discharge.

You did not mention what your Alk # are you dosing to keep it stable?

it has nothing to do with your water parameters this is normal behavior, I have around 7 BTA's in my tank and they do this all the time normally at night, don't touch it just leave it be.

Besides the open mouth, my btas inflate and deflate all the time. Sometimes multiple times per day. But they eat and look very healthy. Have had them for a while now.

An anemone shouldn't look like the second picture on a regular basis. My current E. quadricolor has never looked like that in the 3 years that I have had it.
