That happens to me all the time. I am walking along the south shores of Lake Erie, step over a couple dead bodies, scrap off some zebra mussels, look down and find an amazing zoanthid colony growing on old tire.

The laws here in Hawaii only protect hard stony corals... for fish you need a permit, it's free for up to 5 fish per day. Any more or if you intend to sell them, you need a commercial marine license. Law also states you can take up to 1 gallon per person per day of sand. To be honest I just grabbed 55lbs in one shot and didn’t go back for a few months. lol
I’m trying to start a business here of propagating these soft corals. I know these laws like the back of my hand. I’m really not the type of person to continue to take from the water, so I have the CML license and only intend to keep it for one year. Gives me one year to collect my mother colonies, and from that point on it will be propagation only.

I don't see a difference... I can assume my tank is better maintained and cleaner than the oceans. Put this thought in your head...
An overbuilt island with no sign of an end to construction. Too many cars on this island. Rain run-off no longer seeps into the soil, it now cleans are parking lots and streets before dumping into the ocean. Millions of people per year jumping in the ocean with so much sun tan lotion it’s absurd.
(i love the ones that don't rub it in and their faces and body’s are just white cream. lol)
There are people hear that want to ban the collection of marine fish. They say that the reef fishes are no longer found in shallow water. They blame it on collectors. I blame it on what i posted above.
There is one guy that does snorkel tours here. "Snorkel Bob†If anybody comes here to visit do not give this guy your money. He compares aquarium keepers to pedophiles. He is the one heading up a proposed bill.

Like I mentioned earlier, I am all for preservation… This guy has a hidden agenda… He makes a living off bringing people to see fish. I have a personal friend that has been collect fish in these waters for 30+ years. He has been telling me that he hasn’t seen this many fish [this year] in the past ten years.
I’ll stop now… sorry for the rant. I just can’t stand law makers and people with hidden agendas. Especially these biologists and scientists that have only read about the ocean in there studies and probably have never put on a mask and fins in there lives.
Note: I do know some guys that I’ve worked with here in the state departments that are good guys and do know what they are talking about.

funny, i like the name. fits them well. anyways thanks for posting about taking from the water. i just wasnt sure how it worked there. i think its great though that you are going to do the propagation and stuff instead of always just removing stuff from the ocean. + to you.
i do agree about the disturbance in the ocean and i like you i dont think its just those of us keeping aquariums are the cause. i think aquariums can be very benefical also. should something go extinct or whatever then it doesnt mean its completely gone... someone might have it in there aquarium. and it could be propagated and tried to be reintroduced into the ocean. i think its great.

Collection licenses is not needed. Many people believe that you need a collecting licenses but in reality all you need is a valid fishing licenses. This goes for Florida as well, as long as it is not attached to a existing reef, a tire, dock and so on is not a reef.
but, there are limits to what and how many you can take. Such as Florida you can only take 3 pieces per day. Get caught with more and you are in deep trouble. You can find this information on the website of Florida DNR and also Hawaii DNR.

I know Brandon Florida rather well. I lived in Ft. Myers for a long time and traveled up your way often. You will need to go south! You can find a lot of sun coral in your area. But, naturally they are deep.

Amanda - if you do decide to get some coral make sure these is less than 1oz. of rock attached to it. No one can take rock from Florida even collectors. People are getting Florida rock because the collectors aquaculturing it from dry/dead rock. It is dumped into the ocean by several million pounds at a time. They keep it in there until life is on it, a couple years. Whatever is attached to the rock, since the rock is the property of the collector, they get to keep.
