Just gonna add some fishing experience here: Use round hooks, you don’t run the risk of the fish swallowing. If it does it comes right out and hooks in the corner of the mouth. Much safer for the fish

you’re referring to circle hooks which I don’t think would work well in this application as you don’t really “set the hook” with those. They are designed to slide around in the mouth before finally getting caught in the corner of the fishes jaw as they swim away. A standard j hook that’s been debarbed is safe as long as you don’t allow the fish to swallow the bait into its stomach. Best practice is to “jerk” as soon as the bait is inhaled IME.

With all that being said circle hooks are definitely the safest hook for fish when you are actually fishing.

Tried against a damsel. Line wanted to float, and when I got the hook to sink, other fish tried to bite except the damsel. Too smart.

monofilament tends to float while flourocarbon sinks.

this fishing trick really works best on overly aggressive feeders but I’ve been successful on more timid fish with a little determination!
