I can't be the only one....catching fish with a hook!

I’ve caught multiple fish with a small hook, piece of shrimp for bait. Works like a charm! Never hurt the fish and was able to rehome. It beats waiting a loooonnng time for fish to swim into those traps. Best way to go in my opinion.

For those thinking about this method buy ice fishing equipment. It’s small and a lot of the small jigs are made out of tungsten. They sink quick and have very small hooks. 4lb test line will do just fine.

You can just use a pair of pliers and smash the barb down.

I had to catch my engineer goby. He covered corals with sand and made rocks collapse. Net doesn't work because he will just dart right into the tunnels. Trap doesn't work cause he never extended his body very far out. Finally I got a hook and line. Debarbed it and put a little bit of krill on it. He sucked it right up and I got him out. The moment the line went slack the hook came right off and we moved him into the refugium.

I drain my entire tank to catch fish. I can empty it in about one minute. Works like a charm.

I used to catch freshwater African Jewel Cichlids and Cichlosoma (Heros?) portaligrensis in the canals near the Miami International Airport in the 1970s. I would use the smallest hook available, bait it with a piece of earthworm, and catch all that I wanted. Then I would take them home, place them in a large tank and dab their hook injury with iodine once a day for a couple of days. In a month there was no sign of any injury. The pet shops paid good money for these exotics. My way of reintroducing them into the hobby from the "wild".

Been working some long days and evenings... and haven't been on the boards in a while. Took a break from the fun and bounced over her and saw this thread. I have a few fish I need to rehome out of my big tank. I am really going to have to give this a try. LOL! I may even put the fishing attire.... hip waders... vest and hat on.... Just need to find time to find the fishing gear down in the basement...

I have a mean hawk fish that won't go in a trap. I was wondering if I could hide to baited hook in a milkshake straw to avoid by catch. Do you think that would work? I'm afraid my rabbit fish will take the bait and I'll get stung trying to get the hook out...

Sabiki rigs would be good. Just use individual hooks from the rig.

I think it might be less stressful than a net. The whole chase and trap vs snatched right out of the tank.

I had to go fishing for purple bassler that was killing every small fish in my tank, he loved to eat so it was easy catching him, couldn't save him though, the hook damaged him real bad.

I tried to catch a large sgt major damsel with a hook and line. Just about all my fish tried eating the bait and I’ kept having to snatch/move it when they tried. The sgt major finally tried and fail, it ended up stealing the shrimp. I just gave up. LOL

Years ago I tried using a tiny barbless hook to catch a zoanthid eating tang out of my 240.
Caught most of the fish in my tank except the dang tang.
Caught the female GSM clown twice.
