I finally realized who I am!

For some people it can take many years of soul searching and reflection to finally come to terms with who they are. I'm no different. I've owned a reef for several years and like most started with equipment that was terrible and wouldn't keep xenia alive.

I've upgraded along the way. Bought a better light... then upgraded that light. Better skimmer you ask? Yep! Upgraded twice! Return pumps and mp10wqd? Oh yeah! If one is good then two is better!

So who is it that I finally realize I've become? The guy at the golf course with 5k in golf clubs with the full nike golf outfit and custom everything who can't shoot under 100!

I've dumped thousands into reef equipment and can't keep a stick alive to save my life.

I knew I could figure this out witbout a therapist!

I'm steadily becoming that guy, just traded in some of my Wally-World clubs and got some Callaways (i.e. Just got rid of my Black Box LED for a Maxspect Ethereal, still running Jebao stuff though!)

I'm the guy that plays out of your bag, and has a horrible hook. Aim straight, ball goes right. Aim left, ball goes straight then makes a 90 to the right. As far as corals go, I've managed to not kill anything in the last 2 months...

Equipment doesn't grow corals. Money doesn't grow corals (Unless you want to go all the way, and hire an experienced reefer to maintain your system!) Chemicals, reactors, skimmers, electronics... none of these things grow corals.

Conscientious reef keepers, ones who spend the time and effort to understand the animals they're keeping, who are willing to do the work necessary to maintain these very complex, living works of art... that's what grows corals.

I enjoy the game of Darts. Used to play league, and in an occasional tournament. One day, many years ago, I was at a fairly serious tournament. Company that was making high end darts was there with a booth. I spent a couple hundred dollars that I really couldn't afford on a high end set of Black Widow darts. I still have them. They didn't help me shoot any better, but man, they sure were nice looking. Today, my 'black widow' darts are worn to bare steel, and I'm a MUCH better player. No, the new darts didn't help, but throwing them enough to wear the paint off a set sure did!

I'm now in the process of trying to wear the finish off of my new pool que

LOL, we have all gone through this. I started with the low end clubs and now I have a custom made set for Pings that are 2 degrees off center and longer to suit my height. Same goes for your system, besides the upgrades what else are you doing? Are you dosing? What are you feeding the corals?

I was killing off corals for about a year until I got my tank in a grove. As suggested keep it simple, this is also what I have done and cut out all the dose drops and now dose the balling method and some Mg and my DT is doing very well.

things are very simple. I've battled po4 but seem to have it licked. Now I'm ready to start dosing this week with core 7

Just water changes mainly. I have nuked things with GFO and recently I used the red sea PO4 NO reducer that I later realized was expired and made have caused issues

I so enjoyed your post. Great wisdom and wonderful analogies.

Reliable equipment certainly helps but can't get away from the work even if the work often means just paying attention to the details. I guess to a certain degree, to get really good at reefing requires the same sort of dedication that getting good at almost anything else, like golf, darts or pool.

For a long time I was stuck on the third of the four steps of reefkeeping...

Step 4) it's not me it's my equipment! I would blow through equipment like crazy! Especially lighting.

My last two issues have been honest mistakes. GFO in my opinion is terrible stuff and really needs a much better dosing guide! I smoked an entire reef in days! Even the LPS never recovered. All learning experiences I guess.
