I forgot to salinity acclimate nassarius snails

I was so focused on remembering to temp acclimate that I forgot to salinity acclimate smh. 1 is definitely dead but the others crawled under the sand last night. I turned red light on and observed them in the dark and I only saw one climb out. Then I fed and nothing came out the sand. Now I am panicking. Do you think the others are dead under the sand bed? What should my next course of action be? I am monitoring ammonia.

I never drip acclimate snails. Just float the bag for temp and plop them in. Most snails that we get in the hobby live in coastal environments where the salinity changes are common so they are adapted to it. I really only drip higher inverts, crabs, shrimps, echinoderms and the like.

I only do the temp acclimation with my snails and never have any die. Just pull them out of the bag and drop them in. You may have other issues. What are you water parameters?

Which? Ammonia is zero. Nitrates we’re about 5. I don’t have coral yet so I don’t really track anything else. The only other test I have is pH. Could that be an issue? I was just about to do a water change right now though.

They are more tolerant that other livestock as mentioned, but at a minimum I check the salinity of the source water. Many LFS run super low salinity. When I see that I drip even snails.

It is possible about ph, not sure. What is your ph? No ammonia is good.

I picked up three nassarius snails about 2 and 1/2 months in. Two went under the sand and I could see their tusk (?) and the larger one (big) ended up lurking on the glass. I dripped them and floated.

I tried to spot feed them, but no luck. Two definitely got picked off by the hermits/shrimp and I saw the smallest when cleaning out the sand bed like 3 weeks ago. No idea if he's still alive since I sort of buried him deep in the process. My hermits are brutal though since they picked off almost all of my snail.

Hermits are not reef safe. I got rid of mine for destroying my monti. They all climb up and break off the branches.

I think I might just go get some hermits then..... I didn’t consider them dying under the sand spiking my ammonia. Done with snails from now on.

Interesting. Yes, I picked one off of one of my SPS (small ish orange frag) the other day. Do they actually damage the coral as in eating at the zoa?

I found it strange since there frag is totally sterile (2-3 weeks post h2o2/other dips) as far as algae goes.

Welp, never mind. I do plan on having reef. So I’m expecting them to be dead. Was only going to get the hermits to clean up the carcasses. What should I do about that?

They can take a few days to get in gear sometimes too. Did you have them shipped?

PH, KH, and Calcium levels are fairly important too, mostly for the long-term health though.

NO, do not get hermits. If you plan on corals in the future.

That being the case, I'd suspect something is going on.

Can you take a sample of your water up there and have them check it for you? That way you would know how similar it is.
