Title speaks for itself. I can't stand frags for a number if reasons....

I never have a good place to put them, I think frag racks kind of ruin the look and if even if I find a good spot in my rockwork, they look dumb for a while.

Some are worse then others....SPS not so bad as they grow fast but closed brains usually take forever to grow enough to enjoy.

Fortunately I am not into the really rare corals and most of the corals I like can be bought in colonies for only a little more then frags.

Just thought I would put that out there lol

I don't like the looks of frags either. I don't have corals yet but was hoping corals could easily be removed from a frag then placed in tank or glued onto rubble???

They can.

Yea I agree, frags plugs can be pretty unsightly

Double post

I have a 400g reef. So generally I feel your sentiment. If I can't see the frag from three feet away, it's rather pointless. However, there are times when some new frag excites me, and often it can be something I term "adorable" -- like the tiny Bubble coral frag I got at Elos Aqua Studio. You would think I'd want something bigger - most people would. This little guy looks like something a woman would wear on her finger like a gaudy ring. But it has been growing quietly and has doubled in size. It's about golf ball size now, and it makes me happy.

Small frags turn into colonies if you do everything right. Or maybe they will do something interesting if left unattended for too long, like this accidental mashup.

Ya forsure some work out.....I just find a lot of frags end up falling or I have no where to put it to begin with.....like a favia polyp in a large tank, for me it will end up getting buried, lost or just given up on before it even has a chance to grow

I totally understand. I also don't like fragracks in the display tank. So that means you have to get your arm wet securing the new frag somewhere safe, or... don't get any new frags at all. ;)

Larger colonies have their issues as well, fixing them can be a challenge and sometimes they grow different than initial shape which looks very bad, worst part is they look odd and different from corals that were grown in position.
It's very rewarding to look at a colony that came in as a frag.

Definitely agree with the last part, but I always lose or throw away frags but almost never colonies.

I don't think that looks so good either.... Especially in a tank of colonies....also depends what kind of coral. Of courseca frag tank would the best solution. But when you have a qt, a treatment and a dt, that's enough tanks lolo_O

Thank you! I hate them too. All there are anymore these days are frags. Anytime a nice coral comes into the LFS it gets chopped up. I want to go back to the '90s.

don't see why one would have a frag rack in a tank, it can't but look ugly regardless how nice the frags are. On top my hypo tang will throw the frags all over the tank if I miss a feeding... Still a frag should be glued on the rocks and then one doesn't struggle with loosing frags in the tank. It is true that the slightest STN might be the end of a frag but I have acquired large size, and mini colonies as well as many frags and I find myself observing a frag encrusting and growing a tiny branch here and there much more than I look at larger colonies.

To hobbiests it may look good but for the overall look of the tank, trying to replicate the coral reefs, you cant beat a colony or at least a mini colony.

I just realized you're all talking about frags and not frag plugs. I intend to do frags simply for the cost but hopefully also for the enjoyment of watching it grow. Is that more difficult to do than I am imagining? Or maybe it will just take a very long time and most people have no patience for it. I guess I'll soon find out for myself.
