A few months ago, the fish in my 90 gallon reef tank (corals all LPS/soft) got decimitated with Ich and I lost all my fish except for my wrasse. Tough lesson learned - a quarantine tank is essential and that matter has since been addressed. When I noticed Ich was taking over, I overfed the fish with "Ich Shield" resulting in a mega nitrate explosion, consequently resulting in a green hair algae bloom. I dealt with minor algae issues prior to that but they all came and went. This is a new nightmare which I feel i'm losing to... I do 30% water changes biweekly (attempted to rip out as much GHA as I could, which was is being syphoned) and have a minor bio-load since i'm down to one fish and a CUC consisting of maybe 15 hermits, 2 emeralds, 1 fighting conch. I also had a sea hare, but sadly, it has been MIA for over a week now and I fear he passed away. I have a protein skimmer that seems to be operating effectively. I also have an ATO coming in the mail. No carbon. My salinity stays around 1.025, little to no phosphates (I am aware the green hair is probably consuming the phosphates), alkalinity in proper range, all that jazz... everything on paper, seems ok. I've read that hydrogen peroxide helps, but the GHA is really breaking me down with its maddening resiliency. I've also cut down my lighting to 4 hours a day and reduced the feedings of my wrasse to a couple bio-pellets every two days. I don't know what to do and understand there is no easy fix. I've had this tank for 6 months (i'm a newbie) and don't want to surrender this hobby to this hairy garbage like many do around this time. I've read plenty of posts from people, but looking for any success stories to renew my hope. Any help for this demoralized rookie hobbyist would be greatly appreciated!!

Get a scrub brush, take the rock out of the tank and scrub the living heck out of it. get a bunch of snails. Yea, you can use tap water to rinse it off. Put it back in the tank.

Thanks man - I appreciate the advice!
I been there dude!
A lot of folks will sit and watch it grow and look for a bottle of some thing for weeks. I have thumbs and I will punish that algae! Usually takes about 3 hours.

Yeah i have a lot of built up rage against this super ugly nightmare that has devastated my tank! I'm gonna try to sock it to it this weekend lol!:mad::mad:

I'm in the same boat, unless mine is the dreaded bryopsis which I don't think it is.

I did a water change and soaked 1 piece of rock in the old water for about 6 minutes with 5ml of h2o2 in a 5 gallon bucket. Took a scrub brush and it just flaked right off. I rinsed with clean salt water and back in the tank.

Amazing difference!

H2O2 treatment with or without the manual scrubbing is not a bad idea! I might be tempted to dip the scrub brush into peroxide bweteen brushings as a "cleaner". At least for any really tough spots.

H2O2+bright light can also work. Here's the thing though....elbow grease always pays more dividends. The scrubbing will do somewhat the same role as your cleanup crew, only in fast-forward. Plus it'll do a lot more in the way of dislodging any excess detritus that your CUC is likely to do.

So double bonus for using elbow grease. Plus you can always choose to do H2O2 at any time.....no need to do it all at once.

(Great thread!) :D

I am super bummed this morning... My beloved cleaner shrimp perished (totally loved that dude). I apparently dosed too much hydrogen peroxide and feel like a horrible person. However, this has pushed my motivation to get my tank back, to full overdrive. I am using a wire brush kit and taking all rocks out and absolutely going to town on all remnants of GHA. Its really the only way I will know with confidence that I have defeated it (for the immediate future at least). Its the way the cleaner shrimp would want it... a better existence for future inhabitants... Thanks guys for the advice - I will try to keep you updated on any developments!

Omg how do I delete. This app is so confusing...did not mean to post that here [emoji31]
it happens. Dont sweat it.;)
Good luck, and I would use a tooth brush. If you can take the rock out easy do so.

Thanx! I can take the rock out. Will my gsp be ok? Keep under water while scrubbing? Newbie...obviously [emoji18]
noe worries. The GSP is MUCH harder to kill than GHA. I'm really trying to kill some now. ;).
Itll probably only take a couple minutes out of the water really.

Is there a way to sift the algae build up off my white sand? Its easy to clean off the rocks but on the sand its a pain! I have about 30lbs extra of live sand...could i add more on top to kill it off?

Not really. Id look into more clean up crew, and lowering Phosphates. If you getting that theres a little pronblem
Do you have a thread right now?
You could start one and tag me, on other can chime in. Pics, and Parameters will help.
