thats really what I thought it was at first.

There are no eyes. It looks like it is attached to the rock/not moving.

:for everyone else:

I'm sleeping with one eye open tonight. Pretty sure it will eat me

If it is a sponge can anyone ID what kind? Should I start boiling water to kill this bad boy or let him eat my brains while I'm sleeping?

Definitely alien..get a Predator as they love to eat aliens. Purchase with caution though as they will quickly starve without a healthy amount of aliens or humans readily available.

For real though I'm +1 on sponge..

No idea on ID though i know i have some that are more white but tend to darken up if exposed to light..maybe thats whats happening here?

Looks like a sponge hooked around a chaetomorpha sprout. Don't I see other sponges on that same rock?

Some type of an egg sack maybe?

I have at least 10 different types of sponges. Here's my purple encrusting sponge. See the texture? Looks a lot like your photo.

Are they slimy with not much texture?

Nope, no other sponges that I've noticed

Hmmm not sure what would have laid that. The rock has been in there for 7 months.

Maybe my photo doesn't show it very well but it doesnt seem textured like a sponge. Its more smooth. ill try and get some better photos when I get off work
