So i have a 500g system with about 20 or so fish 7 of them are tangs 7 clowns and a few other guys. I am having issues with my polyp extension on my sps. My alk is at 8.5 salinity is 35 nitrates are 2 but heres the problem. As far as I can see i have no measurable phosphate my corals aren't growing there is no alk uptake it has been at 8.5 for over a month now. I have a ton of sps frags and the day I put a new frag in for the first day it has good polyp extension then every day it gets a little worse until there is none then a few weeks later they begin to stn and die. There are a few corals that have decent extension but they still dont grow. I have taken water samples to my lfs to double check my readings and they are spot on. the tank has been up and running for over 2 years now. I have negelcted it a lot over the last 2 summers not feeding hardly at all. I fear I may have depleted the nutrients to a point where things are starving. Lately I am feeding up to 3 times a day some days most days 2 I am using ocean reef flakes and mysis shrimp. What can do to head off the disaster i feel is coming and get my sticks growing good again?

What are you doing for lights....and if you have it, do you know PAR? Also, what do you have for flow in the tank?

Double post.

What size tank.....if the DT is 500 gallons, 500 watts is not enough.

the dt is 210 7'x2'x2' with a 75 gallon mangrove tank with 120w of 6500k cfl a 150 rubbermaid stock tank sump that has live rock and a small frag flat in it that has 195w of led and a small display sump where I keep chalices it has 240w of leds plus a 24x24x8 macro algae fuge lit by sunlight

I have a bunch of lps also they seem to be doing good i have a brown jelly attack on occasion I am not running gfo and I took my skimmer out last week in a attempt to dirty up the water a little my top off comes from a 4 stage ro system the filters are about a year old

Have you measured the TDS of the effluent from the RO/DI?

Another thought.......have you checked for stray voltage?

How's the color on your sticks? I had a similar situation and startEd feeding even more and colors starting coming back and alk usage began again. I assume it's from the corals feeding and getting stronger but Randy could give you better thoughts I'm sure

No stray voltage i checked with a meter i have not checked tds on the ro water i just assumed that it was good because I'm not having algae blooms

Algae may not result from a depleted DI. Many water supplies do not have much in the way of nutrients in the water, but you may have metals like copper in it.

just checked my tds its 0 the first sample said 12 but i thought i may not have rinsed the cup out well enough so i took another it was 4 so i took a 3rd and it read 0
