I bought a cute little one spot Foxface 2 weeks ago (Bumblebee). I put Bumblebee straight into quarantine. Since being placed into quarantine it seemed like the poor little thing was wasting away. It took almost a week to get her (anything that swims that gracefully has to be female lol) to eat and the entire time her has been huddled in a corner in camouflage.

Today I made the decision to pull Bumblebee from quarantine and place her in my DT. I just felt like she wasn’t thriving and didn’t want to stress her out more. This is the first time I’ve actually seen her spot due to her being camouflaged for 2 weeks. She has been swimming around the full length of my tank and NOT hiding for a change! Even seems to be socializing with my Anthias!

I really hope I didn’t make a mistake by pulling her out too soon. I hope I don’t get some sort of outbreak of ich. Has anyone else pulled a fish out of quarantine early? During the observation she seemed healthy other than looking super stressed.

Did she have a place to hide in QT?

Yes, I had a couple pvc pipes. Maybe there was something off in my quarantine tank. I was having issues keeping ammonia down, it only got to .05 but still... I was constantly changing the water every 3 days even though I was constantly siphoning uneaten food.

Did you cycle the QT or add something from your DT to help with cycling the QT, that won't go back into the DT?

Yes, I had a sponge in my sump for about 4 weeks before I brought her home. However the water was cloudy as well. I also had an ammonia alert on the tank. I wonder if a HOB filter would be better for next time?

Any treatment in QT? Meds will sometimes depress appetite and cause some stress.

What you did is a gamble, for sure. I hope it doesn't come back to bite you. But, if the fish went through prazi, and 2 weeks or copper, for example, then there really isn't any risk.

For sure you need a hob with no carbon, running in a QT, add some bio balls or pellets and white foam for filtering. It will probably eliminate lots of the ammonia issues.

It took almost a week to get her to eat. So I didn’t start meds right away. I gave a dose of prazi but pulled her shorty afterwards because of how pitiful she looked.

Okay. I will definitely take that route next time. I have some ceramic biospheres left over from my DT would these work in addition to the hob?

Just put the biospheres in a mesh bag and leave in your main sump and remove when needed.
Dont put back without cleaning to remove any meds. Keeping a couple works.
I keep 3 liters of eheim substrate pro in a nylon bag in my sump.
Take some out and replenish with new as they are not to bad price wise.
I just got a foxface yesterday that the lfs was keeping for me for 2 weeks. It took a week before it would eat at said lfs.
It was very thin too.
My convict tang was the same way, ver thin, from same store.
Foxface seems happy now and needs to be fattened up.
Good luck with yours.

Okay great! Hopefully the next time goes better. Also, do you believe the cloudiness was from the sponge filter not cycling fully?

Currently she is swimming around with nori in her mouth. Looks like a dog with a bone!

The cloudy water may have been bacteria.
May have been caused from moving the sponge to a lighted area.
Also adding some MB7 when transfering the sponge will give good bacteria and help control nutrients.
