Yeah, doesn’t mean it’s correct though. The only way I can think of getting 230ppm increase in nitrate results in three weeks without 100ppm increase in ammonia (or whatever the calculation is) is interference, multiple errors in testing.
 
It’s one case when I really want to be wrong and come out to say “oops bad test kit” but so far I can’t - it’s really not making sense to me - as it is to most here
 
So you said theres no dead fish. You have a nem, Are you missing one? There are very few things that can pollute 100+ gallons of water like that but a dead anemone would do that much very fast. No sea hares or cucumbers either right?
 
3 different kits aren't going to give the exact same number. Hanna doesn't go that high and the other kits give a range not an exact number. He should have fish floating dead with that number and yet everything appears good in the tank.
No, he wouldn't. 200ppm nitrate isn't going to affect fish at all, and many FO and FOWLR tanks are significantly higher than that.

Marine organisms are way more tolerant of nitrogen than freshwater species - and LC50s for nitrate are typically in the 2500ppm range.
 
Things happen over time in a reef tank.

Something you did 3 weeks or a month ago will start affecting your tank now.

If your trst kits are not all bad then this is what I believe has happened.

You cleaned/stirred up your sand bed about 1 month ago and about 3 weeks ago you dosed n03. This is a solid combination for a n03 spike.

Sounds like thats where the jump in n03 came from.

Large water changes are really the only way to remove n03 without adding more chemicals.

Good luck on getting them down. We have all been there with high n03 and the ones that haven't will eventually;)

No dead fish - however I did had 2 dead Lps - a large euphylia and another softie day before - that didn’t make it. Could be a systematic problem

my morning tests right now - showed 196 (1:10)

opened a fresh batch of reagent - so swing of almost 40 ppm over night - I guess water change regiment

only change I did since yesterday -

1) carbon dosing - min amount
2) add bio brick
3) refugium on for 24x7
4) stopped dosing

Don’t overreact. Only issue you have at the moment is a number on a test kit, which already dropped 20%

My coral stats are followiny

corals
Lps - since dip all 3 Lps have bounced back but they other 2 did melt away in tank
Mushrooms - perfectly fine
Zoa - unhappy and not extending fully - not growing for sure
Anemone - fully happy

Monti - a small red frag has perished - bleached
Grafted - in bad shape hardly can distinguish the color

sps - some older - milli and unknown are Doing fine but all others are new to tank from just 2 days ago
 
Used api test strip as well and it’s showing high end of spectrum - closer to 200

You'll notice that the link you posted does not link to any actual sources. Its something from a freshwater aquarium guide with "Corals" tacked on at the end. Its hobby nonsense.

This site will also tell you that nitrite is harmful, when nitrite LC50 for shrimp larvae is about 200ppm, and its about 500 ppm for fish.


Here's a survey study on nitrate toxicity in freshwater and marine organisms. Go through it and you'll notice that the lowest number that they observed any toxicity for nitrate in seawater is 573 ppm on Monocanthus fingerlings. On most other test, the numbers were in 3000+ ppm range.


Seriously, ignore everything you find on hobby sites. 90% of it is just regurgitated freshwater stuff and is outright wrong. If it's written by Randy - you can probably take it seriously.
