How would you do the flow for a mixed reef...(heavy side of SPS when mature enough) in a 56g that is 30Lx18wx24T....I know that most everyone will say Vortechs and if I had the cash I would...but at this time those are not an option.

So which way would you get the flow you need?

closed loop
tunze pumps...maybe a mix of 6025/6045
Sicce voayger pumps...I saw a video of them and I think they are pretty cool.

would a mp10 be enough for the 56?...If I can get away with one for awhile that maybe the way I go...be it will draw out the time frame for getting the tank going.

I am so old ghetto approach to the flow issue I just use my return and koralias.

Thank Wicked....I am the same way....but I want that random over all flow that I just can't seem to get no matter what I do.

Which Koralias would you suggest for a 24" tall tank? 3's or 4's

I found that Korolias are great for the price, I run 4 #1's they are mounted on the back of the tank in the 4 corners facing forward the uppers are angled to break the water surface, the 2 lowers blow forward just above the substrate. Then I have 2 #2's mounted on each side in the upper front angled down. I have tried #3's there but the flow was too much for my softies. I have a Mag18 for a return pump that because of a 8' head I get about 900gph out of that has 4 outlets that are above the water line to return the water from the sump/fuge. It works in my tank, If I did not have the softies I would use #3's to blow side to side.

+1 or the K's; I run a QuietOne 4000 for my return, and four K2's and two K1's and a nano in my 65gal, which is a mixed reef dominated by Z's and P's, but also contains softies, LPS, and some SPS.

I've mounted some of the K's on the side wall and some on the back, some point up and some point down; gives me good random flow.

anybody got any comments on the Sicce voyager pumps?

How many koralias do you think I will need and which ones would you use?

Although I do have one MP40 in my 140, I still love closed loop with Oceans Motions valves. This could be the answer to your flow problem for $165. With a little ingenuity, you can conceal most of your returns and not have two or three powerheads hanging on the side of your tank.

I have one of the larger 4-Way valves and it has been running flawlessly for three years. The MP40 wet side didn't make it quite that long.

Oceans Motions

If you wanna stay on a budget you could go with the new Koralia Evos, Maxijet mod, or trying buy a Tunze used.

I do think though once you can afford it with a tank under 60G's would be a perfect setup for a Vortech.

i can second that as i am running one standed 4 way little more $$ and not suitable for you answer but the small one is. its great , i have had not problems with it att all and do not like objects in the tank , kind of an eye sore too me and but with the OM i have there is nothing in my tank , no power heads of any kind.

Yeah, definitely less equipment in the tank with the Oceans Motions valves. Here is all you see in mine. This is a set up pic so you can see the bottom returns. I hot glued rubble rock on the pvc to hide them. You can't see them now. One is covered up with GSP and the other some macro algae. All you can see is the nozzles in the upper front corners.

Anyway, back on topic, that Super Squirt would be a sweet piece of equipment for you. Whatever you do, please steer clear of SCWDs. Some people have had luck with them, but I have been down that road and neither of the ones I tried worked for very long. They also restrict flow, so you don't get the maximum rate from your pump. That's been my experience anyway.

I don't think that an MP10 would be near enough for an SPS dominated tank of this size. The options mentioned above by the other pros (Koralia's or a closed loop) would be a much cheaper option. I have 4 MP40's in a 150g going full blast. The MP10 is a GREAT pump, don't get me wrong. It isn't, however, enough flow in the above mentioned setup and you could get much more for much less with the other options IMO.

I personally like the modded maxijets... Cheap and more flow than most bigger and most expensive ones...;) only down fall is they can't move or swivel I should say like the k's... Good solid cheap pumps... If you decide to use a wave maker thou there not a good idea and will chatter like crazy...

You guys are killing me with all the GREAT suggestions .

I do not think the ocean motion will work...as it is clearly marked Tempered bottom...so I can not drill the bottom of the tank.

I was thinking of making a HOT closed loop system for it....I saw one on RC that was hidden really well and you could barly tell it was in the tank...I would paint it black and hide it even more...but this was just a thought...

Closed loops are great but there power hogs and cost ya to run... They can be hidden easy enough if ya spray foam the PVC it will look like rocks... I have seen some really nice ones but I perfer ph's there cheaper to run and push more flow...;)

FYI, you don't have to drill holes in the bottom of the tank. There are no holes drilled in my tank for the closed loop returns. Just the 1 1/2" hole in the back to feed the pump. The bottom front returns are run down the back wall with black PV and under the sand bed.
