I have had a issue with Ich for a month or more now. I first treated it with neufin wich did keep it at bay for a good 3 weeks or more but then I noticed it on the Cole tank. It then spread to the 2 clowns and on the Sailfin. I have lost the 2 clowns and the Cole tang but the Sailfin has cleared of it again and is happy. This now leaves him in the tank on its own.
Do I see if a shop can take him of my hands in exchange for some frags as they can treat it with copper?
How long do I need to leave the tank Fallow for?
Can I add coral in this time and can the snails stay in there?

Thanks all.
Dan

I believe people say the current suggested fallow period for Ich (not Marine Velvet) is 30 days; check on that. The snails, etc., could stay. You might have a rough time finding a LFS to take an infected fish off your hands. Keep us posted :)

There is another possibility here. Perhaps there is a gas exchange issue on your tank. Maybe if that was cleared up then the fish would no longer be susceptible to ich.

You can check out this thread for an alternative to what you are trying to do.

To answer your questions.

If you have no means to treat the fish, I would look into Ich Management, or since it's only the one, it is probably worth it to trade the fish in. There's a few other, non copper based treatments, namely Tank Transfer Method that you could look into as well.

The minimum fallow period for ich is 45 days at a temperature of 81f. Temperature is very important to a successful fallow as colder temperatures slows down the lifecycle. 81f shouldn't bother your corals or inverts.

The snails can stay in the tank, yes. Fallow means without fish. Anything that isn't a fish can stay in the tank. As for adding coral, you can add them during the fallow, however because of the lifecycle of ich, one stage involves encysting onto a hard surface, any coral or invert has the potential to introduce new ich into the tank, which will reset the fallow period. So if you want to add anything, do so as soon as the tang is out.

That's great thanks every one
What is the fallow period how long?

Yes. (Longer for Marine Velvet, I believe, but may your fish never be visited by THAT plague. Lol) And as @Hugh Mann said, essentially anything new added will mean you will have to re-start your 45 day clock, so avoid doing that.

I believe 76 days; I was so "over" Velvet outbreaks when I began, that my last run-in with it I went 80 days just to absolutely, positively kill the beast! o_O

See this is something I can not get wrong anyone give a firm answer?

"Search" Ich & Fallow here on R2R ... you will find the disease experts answering the question all the time. Best wishes! ;)

I had ich and was told 76 days minimum. I went 90 days. Ich has a longer life cycle than velvet an brook and it therefore takes 76 days for them to completely starve out.

45 days at 81 is almost certainly good. 76 days at any normal reef temp (77+) is good too. 90 days is way overkill imo.
Though maybe overkill, the way I see it, 90 can eliminate all traces of parasites, without the worry of extra diseases when you reintroduce fish.
